Wolf Pack victorious over Boise State for first time since 2015

RENO, Nev. - Nevada Women's Tennis earned its first victory over Boise State since the 2015 Mountain West Championships, clinching the Wolf Pack's first conference winning record since 2013.

Boise State took the early lead, winning the doubles point and appearing to spoil Nevada's senior festivities. The doubles session was split with the Broncos winning on courts one and three, while Nevada was victorious on court two. The Wolf Pack led briefly led in the doubles session when Léa Cakarevic and Marlene Foerster defeated Joana Baptista and Ryan Kershner, 6-3. Ana Conde Vendrell and Nicole Discenza dominated the Wolf Pack duo on court three, winning 6-2 over Kennedy Robinson and Mia Miranda. Nevada held a 3-1 lead on court one before Pauline Ernstberger and Shauna Heffernen won five of the final six games to clinch the doubles point against Amahée Charrier and Anastasia Luneva, 6-4.

The Wolf Pack quickly turned the dual around, taking a 3-1 lead over Boise State. On court two, Foerster an Baptista traded service games, bringing the first set to 3-3 before Foerster held her serve twice and broke Baptista to win set one. Foerster proceeded to break Baptista four times in the second set, winning 6-1 to tie the dual for the Pack.

On court five, Wiem Boubaker gave the Wolf Pack the lead with her 6-4, 6-2 win over Ariadna Briones Ginesta. Briones Ginesta held a 4-3 lead in the first set but Boubaker held her serve to tie, then broke Briones Ginesta before winning the set by holding her serve again, going five-for-five in the first set. Boubaker broke Briones Ginesta for the second time in a row, taking an early 2-0 lead in the second set. Boubaker won the final three games of the dual to seal the match.

Charrier appeared to fall behind Ernstberger in the top-flight match, before a first-set comeback fueled her to a straight-set victory. Charrier and Ernstberger held their serves through six games before Boise State's top player broke Charrier for a 4-3 lead. The two broke each other, bringing Ernstberger within a game of winning the set. Charrier, however, broke Ernsterberger again, held her serve, and won the set 7-5 with her third break in a row. Ernstberger continued the trend, breaking Charrier in the first set. Charrier responded with two breaks of her own, taking a 4-1 lead. Charrier finished the match with her sixth break and one last held serve to win set two, 6-2.

The Broncos pulled back a point, winning on court three. Heffernan defeated Lou-Anne Guerbert 7-5 in the first set, breaking Nevada's senior twice in the frame. Heffernan and Guerbert held their serves through seven games, giving Heffernan a 4-3 lead. Guerbert pulled off another second set win, winning the final three games of the set, tying the match. Heffernan dominated the third set from early on, taking a 5-1 lead. Guerbert pulled back two games, but Heffernan came out victorious 6-3 in the final set.

Courts four and six both opened with 6-2 first-set victories for Nevada, before Boise State won the second set by two games. On court six, Robinson dominated Ella Piron in the first set, breaking Boise State's freshman twice. Piron opened the second set with a key break that would lead Boise State to the set victory, 7-5. Robinson and Piron traded service games, tying the third set at 2-2. Robinson proceeded to break Piron twice and held both of her serves to clinch the dual for Nevada.

Luneva and Discenza were tied in the final set when the dual was clinched. Luneva won the first set 6-2, easily, and held a 4-1 lead over Discenza in the second set. Discenza turned her match around, winning the next five games to win the second set. Luneva and Discenza traded service games and breaks, tying all throughout the set before finishing 5-5.

Nevada currently sits in fifth place in the Mountain West heading into the final week of the conference schedule. The Wolf Pack are idle over the final match week, scoreboard-watching San José State's match at Fresno State on Thursday, as well as Colorado State's home match against Wyoming on Friday. Nevada is back in action next week at the Mountain West Championships. The Championships begin on Wednesday, April 24 in Las Vegas with the full schedule to be announced. If the Wolf Pack finish the regular season with a top-five standing, they will begin play on Thursday, April 25, otherwise, Nevada will open the tournament on Wednesday.
