RENO, Nev. – Nevada Women's Tennis maintained their perfect record at McArthur Tennis Center and entered the top half of the Mountain West standings with Friday's 4-0 win over Utah State.
Pre-match, the Wolf Pack celebrated former Nevada tennis player and First Lady of the University, Lauralyn Sandoval. The celebration included Sandoval taking part in the ceremonial first serve and University of Nevada, Reno president Brian Sandoval introducing the Lauralyn McCarthy Sandoval '92 Women's Tennis Scholarship which will sponsor a Nevada women's tennis player annually.
The celebrations continued into doubles play with the Pack winning the doubles point. Utah State opened strong, taking 2-0 leads on both court one and two. Zeynep Ozturk and Laura Eugenio de Hilario held onto their lead, swiftly defeating Amahée Charrier and
Anastasia Luneva, 6-1.
On court two, Léa Cakarevic and Marlene Foester responded to their 2-0 deficit by winning three straight games taking a 3-2 lead. Lisa Kung and Ana Paula Chavez Sanchez pushed back taking a 5-4 lead over the Wolf Pack duo, just needing to hold their serve to clinch the doubles point for Utah State. Foerster and Cakarevic broke Utah State twice forcing a tiebreaker, which the Wolf Pack dominated, winning 7-3.
Prior to the Wolf Pack's doubles point clinch on court two,
Mia Miranda and
Kennedy Robinson improved their spring record together to 6-2, including a 4-1 record in conference play. Robinson and Miranda broke the Aggies to start the match, a game won which would prove to be the deciding factor in the match. Both pairs duplicated each other's results throughout the rest of the third flight match.
Nevada dominated the first set all around the singles session, winning five of the six opening sets.
Charrier led 2-0 early on Ozturk before the Utah State fifth year won five of six games, coming within a game of claiming the first set. Charrier climbed back breaking Ozturk twice to win the first set 7-5. Charrier used her momentum to carry her through the second set, defeating Ozturk 6-2 for the win.
Seconds after Charrier put the Pack up two,
Wiem Boubaker gave the Pack their third point of the dual. Boubaker was tightly contested with Magdalena Nunez Pureco on court five, tied 3-3 midway through the opening set. Boubaker then won the nine of the final 11 games to defeat Nunez Puerco, 6-3, 6-2.
The Wolf Pack clinched the dual on court four with Luneva's 6-2, 7-5 win over Niyati Kukreit. Luneva won four straight games to close out the first set. Kukreti then pressured Luneva, holding a 5-4 lead over Nevada's Russian native. Luneva broke Krukreti twice in the final three games to seal the Wolf Pack's fourth home victory.
The Pack dominated in the unfinished matches, holding late leads in two of the matches. On court two, Foerster finished two games shy of a victory over Eugenio de Hilario, leading 7-5, 4-3 when the dual was abandoned.
Kennedy Robinson won the first set against Chavez Sanchez, 6-3, and was knotted at five all when the dual concluded.
Lou-Anne Guerbert pulled off what now seems to be her specialty at McArthur Tennis Center, losing the first set before quickly dominating the second set to force a deciding frame. Guerbert lost set one, 6-2, to India Nespor but returned the favor to Nespor, winning set two, 6-2. The final set was tied 1-1 when Nevada clinched.
The Wolf Pack, now .500 in conference play, sit in fifth place, holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over Colorado State.
Nevada welcomes Boise State on Sunday at noon with an opportunity to finish with a winning conference record for the first time since 2013. Sunday, the regular season finale is also senior day, where the Pack will celebrate Luneva,
Mathilde Sarcelet, and
Gabriella Charalampidi.
