RENO, Nev. – Nearly a whole day after the first serve, Nevada Men's Tennis defeated San Diego State, 4-2, in their conference home opener. The Wolf Pack (5-10, 1-1 MW) clinched Monday afternoon, winning two of the three remaining matches.
Â
The match began Sunday with Nevada winning the top-flight doubles match.
Matheo Coupu and
Youssef Kadiri defeated Alexander Mandma and Robin Parts, 6-3. San Diego State won the two remaining matches to win the doubles point. On court two, Johannes Seeman and Eugenio Gonzalez came back from down 3-1 to defeat
Loris Zisswiller and
Rémy Trégourès. Bora Sengul and Chikaya Sato opened the third flight match with a break against
Edgar Destouet and
Greg Valente. The Aztecs' break led them to the match victory as the teams held each of their serves for the rest of the match.
Â
The court one match flew by, finishing all three sets before any other match concluded. Seeman won the first set 6-3 however, Coupu won 12 of the next 15 games, winning sets two and three, 6-2, 6-1.
Â
Zisswiller and Sengul traded games all the way through set one, forcing a tiebreaker which Sengul would pull away in, leading 4-3. Zisswiller rallied back, winning the final four points of the tiebreaker and the set. The dual began to heat up in the second set of Zisswiller and Sengul's match. Sengul pulled multiple antics to get under Zisswiller's skin, eventually gaining the attention of the chair umpire who gave a game penalty to Sengul. The penalty helped Zisswiller claim four straight games including two breaks to win the match, putting Nevada ahead 2-1.
Â
Just before the rain began, San Diego State pulled a point back to tie the dual, 2-2. Parts defeated Trégourès through two breaks, one coming in each set. Parts won the match 6-4, 7-5.
Â
When the dual was suspended, the Pack held leads in all three matches that were yet to finish.
Â
On court three, Kadiri dropped the first set 6-2 to Sato but won a tight second set, 7-5. Destouet's match featured the same results with Gonzalez winning the first set 6-2 before Destouet tied the court four match with a 7-5 set victory. Finally, Valente edged out Madma on court six to win the first set 7-6 (5) before Mandma took a commanding 5-0 lead in the second set when the rain and hail suspended the match.
Â
On Monday, San Diego State came out blazing, tying court three at 1-1 in the final set, and pulling within one on court four. Valente managed to win a game before losing the second set to Mandma, 6-1.
Â
Destouet and Gonzalez held their service games throughout the match leading to a 6-4 set victory for Destouet, emphasizing the importance of Destouet's first-game break on Sunday. Destouet and Gonzalez flared up throughout the match, exchanging words on multiple occasions and receiving warnings from the umpire.
Â
The Pack clinched the dual on court three when Kadiri won his final set, 6-3. Chikaya looked to take a 4-3 set lead with Kadiri down love-40 on his own serve. However, the Moroccan came back to force deuce and won the deciding point to take the 4-3 lead for himself. Kadiri then broke Chikaya and held serve for the match and dual victory.
Â
Nevada's victory evens out their Mountain West campaign, improving to 1-1 in conference play. The Pack stays home for a noon match on Friday against the visiting New Mexico Lobos (10-7, 1-0 MW). The Lobos are coming off of a 4-3 victory against ranked Utah State.
