Wolf Pack beat San Francisco and Hawai’i, fall to UC Davis at Golden State Invitational

DAVIS, Calif. – Nevada Men's Tennis defeated San Francisco and Hawai'i in its Golden State Invitational neutral matches but lost a tight 4-2 to hosts UC Davis for a 2-1 weekend split.

Nevada 4, San Francisco 3
The Wolf Pack opened its three-match weekend against San Francisco winning the doubles point. On court one, the Dons' Davide Cortimiglia and Giovanni Branchetti won the first game against Nevada's Matheo Coupu and Youssef Kadiri, however, Nevada's top pair won six straight games to defeat Cortimiglia and Branchetti, 6-1. San Francisco responded by winning on court three with Paul Theate and Moritz Hoffmann's 6-2 win over Edgar Destouet and Greg Valente. Rémy Trégourès and Loris Zisswiller clinched the doubles point for the Pack. Both teams held their service games until each duo broke a game, tying the set at 3-3. Either team held serve once more before Zisswiller and Trégourès broke Asaf Friedler and Roman Lafond to win the match 6-4 in their following service game.

Trégourès put the Wolf Pack ahead 2-0 with his singles win on court five, defeating Cortimiglia 6-2, 6-1. Trégourès broke Cortimiglia five times through his victory.

Zisswiller extended the Nevada lead to three, defeating Friedler 7-6, 6-2. Every service game was won in the first set, before Zisswiller pulled away in the tiebreaker, giving him the momentum to win the second set with ease.

The Dons began their comeback attempt with Lafond's 6-4, 6-1 victory against Valente on court six. San Francisco pulled within one point with Theate's gritty victory against Kadiri. Kadiri and Theate won their games in pairs, beginning with Kadiri's break to pull ahead 3-2. Theate then led 4-3 and 6-5 when Kadiri tied and forced a tiebreaker. Theate won the tiebreaker and managed a pair of key breaks in the second set to win 7-6, 6-4.

San Francisco tied the dual on court one. Hoffmann beat Coupu in the first set, 6-3, with a strong performance, but Coupu battled hard in the second set to force a tiebreaker. The back-and-forth tiebreaker fell in Hoffmann's favor. Coupu received a game penalty for racket abuse following the match, carrying the penalty over to the only remaining match of the dual.

With Destouet and Branchetti tied 2-2 in the deciding third set, Branchetti won his ongoing game to lead 3-2, then added the game penalty against Coupu to take a 4-2 lead over the Pack. Destouet was fueled by the setback, winning the final four games to win his match and the dual.

Nevada 2, UC Davis 4
On day two, UC Davis gained the early advantage with the doubles point. Ivan Savkin and Ryan Torres defeated Zisswiller and Trégourès on court two, 6-3. The Wolf Pack tied the doubles session through a top-flight tiebreaker victory from Coupu and Kadiri over Lucas Bollinger and Max Fardanesh. Another tiebreaker decided the doubles point, this time favoring UC Davis's Sam De Vries and Eduardo Gonzalez, 7-6.

The Aggies pulled ahead 3-0 with a pair of wins at the bottom of the lineup. Fardanesh defeated Trégourès 6-1, 6-2 on court five, shortly before Bollinger beat Valente 6-4, 6-3 on court six.

The Wolf Pack's comeback attempt was sparked by Zisswiller's come-from-behind win against Brett Brinkman. Brinkman claimed the first set 6-2 before Zisswiller responded with a 6-4 second set win and a third set sweep.

Coupu bounced back from his tiebreaker loss the day prior with a ranked victory over No. 114 Torres 7-6, 6-3. The dual was clinched soon after with Antreas Djakouris' 6-3, 7-6 win against Kadiri.

Nevada 4, Hawai'i 2
Nevada claimed their second doubles point of the weekend with two victories against the Rainbow Warriors. Coupu and Kadiri traded games with Andy Hernandez and Karl Collins until a Hawai'i break put Hernandez/Collins up 5-3. Four straight game victories and two breaks paved the way for Coupu and Kadiri's weekend sweep. The Pack clinched the doubles point with Valente and Trégourès' win on court three against Sohta Urano and Guillaume Tattevin, 6-4.

The bottom of the lineup turned around their performance from earlier in the day, this time winning both matches on courts five and six. Trégourès defeated Urano 6-1, 6-3, while Valente was victorious over Blue Cockle 6-1, 6-4.

Hawai'i claimed the middle of the lineup, earning wins from Tattevin on court three against Zisswiller, 6-3, 6-1, and Collins, 6-2, 6-4 over Destouet.

Kadiri clinched the dual for Nevada with his second flight win over Hernandez, 7-5, 6-2. Coupu led his top-flight match against Quinn Snyder 7-6 (4), 4-3 at the abandonment of the match.

The Wolf Pack will be idle for the week before hosting Saint Mary's in their home opener on March 20 at 2 p.m. Nevada will then host Jessup for a doubleheader on March 23 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Admission to all home matches at McArthur Tennis Center is free for all spectators.
