Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nevada women’s basketball loses close clash with Cowgirls

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Nevada women's basketball fell just short in Saturday's showdown with the Cowgirls 59-52 at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie.

Freshman guard Izzy Sullivan and sophomore forward Kennedy Lee led Nevada in scoring with 10 points each. Redshirt sophomore forward Natalie Lathrop co-led Nevada in rebounds with six on her birthday.

After Wyoming jumped out to a quick four-point lead in the first quarter, junior guard Kaylee Borden hit a jumper that was followed by a 3-pointer from senior forward Lexie Givens for a Wolf Pack lead. Wyoming tied it up with a pair of free throws, but a layup from junior guard Audrey Roden and a 3-pointer from senior point guard Victoria Davis allowed Nevada to take the lead after the first period.

Sullivan and Lee helped the Pack stay out in front to start the second quarter with two layups, with Lee's second chance bucket giving Nevada a seven-point advantage. Following a Wyoming run that cut the Pack's lead to one point, Nevada responded with baskets on back-to-back possessions to give Nevada a 24-19 advantage. Wyoming, however, scored six of the final seven points of the half to force a tied game going into the locker room.

Wyoming opened the third period with a free throw and basket to take the lead, with a 3-pointer by Sullivan tying the game at 30. The Cowgirls finished the third quarter shooting 46 percent from the floor to take a five-point lead with seconds remaining in the period. With 0.9 seconds left, Lathrop knocked down a buzzer-beating bucket to make it a one-possession game heading into the final 10 minutes.

Following six straight points to open the fourth quarter, Wyoming knocked down a 3-pointer to make it a 10-point game. Nevada quickly bounced back, scoring two straight baskets to go with a free throw to cut Wyoming's lead in half with under two minutes to play.

Nevada capitalized off an inbounds pass to keep it a five-point game following a pair of Wyoming free throws and Lee came up with a layup late. The Cowgirls, however, hit its final four free throws to seal the win.

Nevada continues its Mountain West road trip at Air Force Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
