FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With the game tied at 74 points apiece and just 2.5 seconds left on the clock, Nevada took a timeout to draw up what would be the final play of regulation. Inbounding the ball from underneath their own basket, Jarod Lucas cut across the free throw line to the right side of the court, and Daniel Foster hit him with a pass on the run. Lucas received the pass on the move, took one dribble, and put up a heave from beyond half court with time expiring. With all eyes on Lucas, his shot soared through the air, went off glass, and found the bottom of the net, as he buried one of the most memorable shots in Nevada Basketball history, propelling the Pack to an impressive 77-74 road victory over Colorado State.
Following the win, Nevada improved to 23-6 overall this season, including a mark of 10-5 in Mountain West play.
Nevada's 23 victories this season surpassed the Pack's win total from last season. The victory also marked the Pack's second win over Colorado State this season, as Nevada earned a regular season sweep of the Rams.
Nevada played at a prolific level on both ends of the court throughout the game. Offensively, the Pack shot an exceptional 47.6 percent from behind the arc (10-21) and 76.7 percent from the free throw line (23-20).
On the defensive side of the court, Nevada limited Colorado State to just 33.3 percent shooting from behind the arc (6-18), while holding the Rams, one of the premier transition offensive teams in the country, to a measly seven fastbreak points.
Lucas was sensational throughout the game, scoring a team-high 23 points, while draining 3-5 shots from behind the arc. Lucas also pulled down a career-high seven rebounds, dished out three assists, and recorded one steal, as the fifth-year senior put together one his most complete performances of the season, in addition to hitting one of the most remarkable shots in Wolf Pack basketball history.
Tre Coleman was outstanding for the Pack, as the senior scored 16 points on 6-8 shooting from the field and 3-4 from behind the arc, while also pulling down four rebounds, dishing out two assists, and recording two blocks. Coleman matched Tyler Rolison with a game-high plus/minus of +7 in 30 minutes of action.
Hunter McIntosh, making his first start as a member of the Pack, put together a tremendous performance for Nevada. McIntosh scored 14 points; and, as the primary ball handler for Nevada, completed the game with zero turnovers in a season-high 31 minutes of action.
Senior guard Daniel Foster had one of the best performances of his career, putting together an incredible outing when Nevada severely needed it with star guard Kenan Blackshear out due to a minor injury. Foster scored 13 points on a highly efficient 4-6 shooting from the field, 2-3 from behind the arc, and 3-4 at the free throw line. Foster also pulled down three rebounds, dished out two assists, and recorded two steals.
Nick Davidson did not have his best offensive performance; however, the redshirt sophomore pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass.
Freshman guard Tyler Rolison came off the bench and was instrumental for the Pack in 12 minutes of action. Rolison scored six points, while knocking down a perfect 4-4 shots at the free throw line.
Nevada led for nearly the entire contest, as they maintained an advantage over the Rams for 38 minutes and six seconds throughout the game.
First Half
The Rams drew first blood, as they knocked down a 3-pointer 24 seconds into the game to take a 3-0 lead over the Pack.
Nevada quickly responded, as Lucas drilled a mid-range jumper; and, after a defensive stop, McIntosh splashed his first 3-pointer of the game, giving Nevada a 5-3 lead.
Less than a minute later, McIntosh buried another 3-pointer, as the Pack took an 8-3 advantage at the 17:25 mark.
The two squads went scoreless over the next two minutes and 25 seconds, before Colorado State made their second 3-pointer of the night, cutting the Pack's edge down to two points.
On Nevada's subsequent possession, Lucas drilled another mid-range jumper, pushing the Pack's lead up to four points, as they held a 10-6 advantage with 14:42 remaining in the half.
The Rams trimmed Nevada's lead down to one-point with 13:12 on the clock; however, Nevada had a tremendous answer. The Pack reeled off a 7-0 run after CSU managed to get within one point, beginning with a massive two-handed slam by K.J. Hymes over a Colorado State defender. Shortly after the dunk by Hymes, Coleman finished a difficult left-handed reverse layup. Lucas completed the run by draining a 3-pointer, as Nevada took a 19-11 lead over CSU nearly halfway through the first period.
Colorado State quickly scored four consecutive points; but, McIntosh hit a contested step back jump shot to end the CSU run and extend Nevada's advantage up to six points with 8:49 to go until halftime. After CSU trimmed the Pack's lead down to four points, Lucas buried another contested shot from behind the arc, deflating the crowd and giving Nevada a 26-19 lead with just over seven minutes left in the half.
After nearly a minute and a half of scoreless play following Lucas' 3-pointer, Foster finished a contested floater, and Nevada pushed their lead up to nine points.
CSU proceeded to score five straight points, bringing the Rams within four points of the Pack with 4:40 left in the first period.
Leading by just four points with a raucous crowd getting heavily into the game, Nevada calmly took control of the contest and outscored Colorado State 11-4 over the remainder of the period, as the Pack took a 39-28 advantage into halftime.
Nevada shot 50 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from behind the arc in the first half, while limiting Colorado State to clips of 39.3 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from behind the arc.
Second Half
Colorado State opened the second half on a 4-0 run over the first minute and seven seconds, quickly cutting Nevada's lead down to seven points with 18:53 on the clock.
Coleman responded for the Pack, draining a 3-pointer to extend Nevada's lead back up to 10 points, as the Pack held a 42-32 edge with 18:14 to go.
The Pack went scoreless over the next 3:45 of game time, and Colorado State was able to get within five points of Nevada at the 14:29 mark, forcing the Pack to take a timeout.
Nevada missed a shot out of the timeout; but, Foster pulled down a huge offensive rebound and proceeded to bury a massive 3-pointer, as the Pack increased their lead to eight points with 13:48 left in the contest.
28 seconds later, after being fouled on a 3-pointer, Lucas knocked down all three free throws, giving Nevada a 48-37 lead.
Colorado State battled back once again, scoring four straight points to trim the Pack's lead down to seven points with 12:30 remaining in the game.
The two squads traded free throws on the next four possessions, as Nevada found themselves ahead of the Rams 52-45 with 11:30 on the clock.
Hymes knocked down one of two free throws shortly after; but, CSU proceeded to score three straight points, trimming the Pack's lead down to five points with just over 10 minutes to go.
The two teams scored six points apiece over the next two minutes and 25 seconds.
Leading by five entering the final stretch of the game with the Rams continuing to make a push, Coleman backed down his defender, drove by him, and finished a contested layup through contact, as Nevada took a 61-54 lead with 7:37 left in the game.
McIntosh drained two free throws 24 seconds later, extending Nevada's advantage to nine points.
Colorado State used a 7-0 run over the next 3:50 to cut the Pack's lead down to just two points, as Nevada held a 63-61 edge with just 3:23 remaining.
McIntosh drilled one of the biggest shots that he has made in a Wolf Pack uniform on Nevada's next possession, as the fifth-year senior drove towards the baseline and drained a step back jumper over his defender to give the Pack a four-point lead. After a monumental defensive stop, Davidson was fouled and proceeded to hit both free throws, as Nevada took a 67-61 lead with 2:08 to go.
The Rams scored 31 seconds later, and Nevada took a timeout leading 67-63 with 1:37 on the clock. Coming out of the timeout in a vital possession, the Pack drew up a perfect play, as Lucas found Coleman open behind the arc, and Coleman buried a 3-pointer, pushing the Pack's lead up to 70-63 with 1:08 left in the game.
The Rams made a layup on the other end and fouled Nevada after they inbounded the ball. Foster went to the line and knocked down one of two free throws, and CSU went down and scored on the other end, cutting the Pack's lead down to four points with 35 seconds left.
After a pair of free throws from Rolison, CSU buried a 3-pointer, as Nevada found themselves leading by just three points with 22 seconds on the clock.
Lucas was fouled and made one of two free throws; but, CSU scored once again, trimming the Pack's lead down to just two points with 11 seconds left.
Lucas was fouled once again; and, for the first time all season, he missed both free throws. CSU went down and drained a mid-range jumper, tying the game up with 2.5 seconds left.
After missing three of four free throws, and the game tied at 74-74, Lucas did not shy away from the moment. He calmly took the inbounds pass and drained one of the most incredible shots in Nevada Basketball history, as he buried a shot from beyond half-court as time expired to lead Nevada to the massive three-point road victory over the Rams.
