Box Score MAUI, Hawaii - The second and final day of the Maui Classic took place on Friday, where Nevada women's basketball fell after a fourth quarter comeback effort fell short to Western Kentucky, 80-70.
Lexie Givens moved up in the record book to seventh all-time in rebounds after recording 12 on the night. She now has 695 in her career. She also tallied 15 points to record her second double-double of the season.
The Pack opened up the game down by four. Givens picked up where she left off yesterday, knocking down the first points for Nevada with two made free throws to cut Western Kentucky's lead in half.
Nevada kept it close through the first five minutes before Western Kentucky pulled away. The Pack were playing from behind, 25-6, heading into the second quarter.
Givens had a strong start in the second, knocking down a three for the Pack. As a team, Nevada had a better scoring performance than the first, tallying a total of 18 points. However, the Hilltoppers continued to build onto their lead.
Going into halftime, the Wolf Pack were down, 43-24.
Nevada came out with fire in the second half, going on a seven-point scoring run to cut Western Kentucky's lead to 15 just over three minutes into the third. Every time the Pack cut into the lead, the Hilltoppers added on again.
Despite the intense start of the third, the Pack were trailing, 60-41, into the final 10.
The Pack came all the way back to be within 11 in the fourth quarter after an eight-point scoring run that started with two made free throws by
Imbie Jones and was capped off with a three by
Victoria Davis.
Later in the quarter, Nevada was within 10 after forced turnovers by the defense and drawing fouls that led to multiple trips to the line. With just over five minutes to go in the game, Davis scored a layup to cut the lead to single digits.
Nevada's intensity only continued as
Audrey Roden splashed a three to bring the Pack within four. However, the comeback efforts fell just short as Nevada ultimately fell.
Jones and
Dymonique Maxie each had 13 points, and eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Davis had 12 points with four rebounds.
Nevada will start conference play on December 29, taking on San Jose State at home at 1 PM.
