Utah State defeats Nevada women’s basketball

RENO, Nev. - Utah State defeated Nevada women's basketball 65-62 Wednesday night at Lawlor Events Center.

Freshman guard Izzy Sullivan led Nevada in scoring with 15 points while senior guard Victoria Davis added 11 points. Junior guard Audrey Roden scored 10 points while dishing out a career-high seven assists.

Nevada took control of the first quarter, opening the first period with a 10-2 scoring run. After Nevada held a double-digit lead, Utah State hit a jumper to cut the Pack's lead to single digits before hitting a free throw and jumper for a seven-point game.

A 3-pointer by Sullivan allowed the Pack to retake their double-digit lead, but Utah State responded with a 7-0 scoring run to make it a four-point game. Fifth year guard/forward Kaylen Banwareesingh converted a layup to put Nevada ahead 30-23 before the Aggies hit back-to-back jumpers to make it a three-point game going into the locker room.

Utah State opened the third quarter with a jumper and a free throw to tie the game at 30, with a 3-pointer by Davis allowing the Pack to keep momentum and the lead. The Aggies answered with a 3-pointer and a layup to swing the advantage before the Pack held them scoreless in the last two minutes of the quarter. Nevada capitalized with six straight points to close out the third quarter with a five-point advantage.

The Aggies opened the final period on an 8-0 scoring run to take a 46-43 lead, but a jumper by senior forward Lexie Givens and a free throw by freshman guard Dymonique Maxie tied it up once again. Six straight points by Utah State guard Cheyenne Stubbs (32 points) allowed the Aggies to take a 55-49 lead.

The Pack never gave up, with Davis hitting a 3-pointer following a Kennedy Lee jumper to make it a one-point game. Utah State, however, answered with back-to-back jumpers and hit six of its final eight free throws to seal the win.

Nevada travels to Laramie, Wyoming, to take on the Wyoming Cowgirls Saturday at 1 p.m.
