Ann Arbor, Mich. – Nevada Men's Tennis drops to 1-2 following second consecutive loss to a ranked opponent.
The Wolf Pack looked to bounce back following Saturday's loss to 14
th-ranked Michigan but were met with 22
nd-ranked Memphis in the ITA Kickoff – Ann Arbor consolation match. Memphis boasted #80 Pau Fanlo at flight three, the third ranked individual Nevada faced this weekend.
The doubles slate looked to be going Memphis' way from the start with the Pack only picking up five games total from the three matches. At no. 1, Pablo Alemany and Charlie Barry nearly completed the sweep against
Matheo Coupu and
Greg Valente, however, the Nevada duo was able to nick a game away, losing 6-1. Flight two was a similar bout, Harry Rock and Conor Gannon took a large lead over
Edgar Destouet and
Youssef Kadiri. Destouet and Kadiri began their comeback effort, but came up short in it, falling 6-2. Sam Reeve and Fanlo were also en route to victory over
Loris Zisswiller and
Rémy Trégourès, leading 5-2 however their match was abandoned early as Memphis had clinched the doubles point.
Nevada opened singles play with a promising look, keeping five of the six matches within a game until late in each of the first sets. However, all things began to fall Memphis' way when Coupu was forced to retire due to injury, giving Alemany the 5-5, ret. victory and Memphis the 2-0 lead. At no. 4, Zisswiller looked to force a third set with multiple two-game leads in the second set. Rock managed the come-from-behind win in a tiebreak, winning 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Fanlo and Mortiz Kudernatsch each completed their 6-3, 6-3 victories over Destouet and Valente, respectively, at the same time, leading to the rare 5-0 scoreline. Both Tigers looked strong throughout their matches, neither letting Nevada spark a comeback attempt.
The Pack's strongest match of the weekend came from Kadiri, who won his first set 6-4 and held a commanding three-game lead in the second set over Gannon. Gannon managed to bring the set even to 5-5 when the dual was abandoned, preserving the sweep for Memphis.
Nevada freshman Trégourès continues to impress in competitive matches. Trégourès and Juan Zabala traded games in the first set before Zabala won the tiebreaker and the set. Their match concluded 7-6 (3), 3-1, unf.
Looking ahead, Nevada travels to Davis, Calif. next weekend with a doubleheader against UC Davis, at 10:30 AM, and American River College, at 2:30 PM.
