Wolf Pack drops ITA Kickoff opener to #14 Michigan

Ann Arbor, Mich. - Nationally ranked Michigan sweeps Nevada Men's Tennis, 4-0.

Nevada Men's Tennis was drafted into one of the most competitive ITA Kickoff groups with all three of its possible opponents being ranked as of January 24. The Wolf Pack's first match of the weekend was against #14 Michigan, a squad boasting the country's ninth and 61st-best singles players, as well as a 31st-ranked doubles team.

The Wolverines jumped out to a strong start, winning to doubles point with a pair of 6-2 victories. The ninth-ranked pair of Gavin Young and Nino Ehrenschneider defeated Matheo Coupu and Greg Valente at flight no. 1. Michigan's Jacob Bickersteth and Nicholas Steiglehner duplicated the 6-2 score for their flight no. 3 victory over Loris Zisswiller and Rémy Trégourès. The Wolf Pack held a 5-3 lead in the second flight match before the game was called short as Michigan clinched the doubles point.

The singles slate, like the doubles slate, was tilted in Michigan's direction. At no. 1, #9 Young won 10 straight games against Coupu, winning 6-0, 6-2. Michigan's Patorn Hanchaikul also made quick work of his match, defeating Trégourès 6-1, 6-1, bringing the dual score to 3-0. A few minutes later, Will Cooksey sealed the dual-clinching point for Michigan with his 6-1, 6-2 win over Valente.

Nevada was competitive in its three unfinished matches, notably with Edgar Destouet just a game away from forcing a third set, his match was cut off at 2-6, 6-5, unf. Youssef Kadiri gave #61 Bickersteth a challenge in their first set, but his upset attempt was thwarted, ending 6-4, 5-1, unf. Zisswiller was also looking to force a final set before the early finish, his match against Bjorn Swenson was 6-2, 4-3 at the conclusion of the dual.

The Wolf Pack returns to the Varsity Tennis Center tomorrow at 7 a.m. PT, 10 a.m. ET. Nevada will take on the loser of #9 Stanford vs. #22 Memphis in the ITA Kickoff - Ann Arbor consolation match.
