Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sullivan’s 20 points leads Nevada women’s basketball to road win at SJSU

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Led by 20 points from freshman guard Izzy Sullivan, Nevada women's basketball won its second road game in Mountain West play with a 64-57 victory Saturday afternoon at San Jose State.

Sullivan, who registered her third 20-point game of the season and second in Mountain West play, knocked down five 3-pointers to go with 58.3 percent shooting from the floor. Knocking down a 3-pointer in eight consecutive games, Sullivan now has the fifth-most 3-pointers made by a Nevada freshman in a single season with 31.

Junior guard Audrey Roden and fifth year guard Claire Jacobs both added 10 points, with Roden collecting a pair of layups to help Nevada maintain the lead in the closing minutes. Roden also dished out a pair of assists, needing just one more for her 100th career assist.

Playing just 40 miles from her hometown in Alameda, senior forward Lexie Givens jumped at the chance to give Nevada the early lead. Nevada's leading rebounder knocked down a 3-pointer and followed that up a strong layup to give the Pack an early advantage.

After San Jose State converted three offensive possessions to swing the lead, Sullivan's first 3-pointer of the game allowed Nevada to retake advantage. Free throws from Roden and an offensive putback from senior guard Victoria Davis gave Nevada a two-point edge after the first 10 minutes.

A quick 7-0 run to begin the second quarter allowed the Pack to stretch its lead, with 3-pointers from junior guard Kaylee Borden and Sullivan allowed Nevada to go ahead with a double-digit advantage. San Jose State cut the deficit back down to single digits with a jumper, but Nevada held the Spartans stay scoreless for the final 1:30 of the half to take a nine-point lead into the locker room.

Another 3-pointer from Sullivan allowed Nevada to go back up by 10 in the third quarter, but San Jose State responded with back-to-back baskets from beyond the arc to make it a four-point game. Two more 3-pointers from Sullivan and a layup by freshman guard Dymonique Maxie allowed Nevada to retake a 10-point lead. The Spartans then converted two consecutive layups to cut the Pack's advantage 43-37. An offensive rebound and second chance basket from fifth year guard/forward Kaylen Banwareesingh just before the buzzer put Nevada in front by eight points heading into the final period.

After a back and forth battle to start the fourth quarter, San Jose State went on a quick 6-0 run to make it a one-point game. Nevada, however, used three free throws to stay out in front and make it a two-possession game in the closing minutes.

While Sullivan led Nevada's offense with her scoring, she used her passing to help the Pack execute clutch moments down the stretch.

Right after San Jose State answered, Sullivan found Roden for two layups that put Nevada ahead by six with under a minute to go in regulation. The Pack hit five of their final six free throws to seal its second road win in conference play.

Nevada continues its road trip Wednesday at Utah State for a 5 p.m. tipoff with the Aggies.
