Nevada’s second half efforts results in draw with UC Riverside

RENO, Nev. - After facing a one-goal deficit at halftime, Nevada soccer scored in the 57th minute to climb back to a 1-1 draw against UC Riverside at Mackay Stadium in Sunday's home opener.

Nevada junior Penny Murphy scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick, scoring for the first time since Oct. 10, 2021.

UC Riverside and Nevada traded possessions for the opening 10 minutes, with junior Emily Rich firing the first pair of shots for the Pack to get the offense rolling. After Nevada's shot on goal in the 19th minute ended with a UC Riverside save, the Highlanders got on the board first.

Feeding off the assist from Daphane Mendez, UC Riverside's Juliet Savage found the back of the net that gave the Highlanders the early lead. Nevada looked to answer by firing three shots to close the first half, but the narrow misses gave UC Riverside the edge going into the locker room.

Drawing a corner kick 12 minutes into the second half, Nevada executed the corner to perfection. Murphy's kick was high and long enough to find the back of the net unassisted and allowed the Pack to knot the score 1-1.

Nevada continued its aggressive press, firing four more shots following the equalizer goal. A pair of saves by UC Riverside allowed the match to stay tied with 20 minutes to play.

The Pack looked for another opportunity to take the lead by drawing a penalty kick, but a diving save from UC Riverside's Cassia Souza allowed the match to stay tied with one minute remaining. Nevada's final shot with 10 seconds to play was high, ending the match in a draw.

Nevada goes back on the road to take on LMU Thursday at 7 p.m.
