Three goals allows LMU to defeat Nevada soccer

LOS ANGELES - LMU defeated Nevada soccer 3-1 Thursday night at Sullivan Field.

Junior Emily Rich scored her first goal of the season, moving into the top 10 in program history in career goals (9) and career points (26). Sophomores Serene Gronauer and Sydnie Fong, Nevada's two Division I transfers to join the Pack this season, collected their first career assists Thursday.

Only allowing one shot to LMU through the first 11 minutes, Nevada looked to take advantage of a pair of corner kicks in the 12th minute. After LMU forced the Pack's first shot to go off target, Nevada responded by blocking the Lions' shot to keep the match tied.

LMU looked to get on the scoreboard before the first half came to a close, but a quick reaction from redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ally Larkin prevented the Lions from scoring a goal in the 42nd minute. The Lions looked for a last-minute score before the horn and once again Larkin protected the net that allowed the first half to end scoreless.

After Larkin came down with the save off LMU's first shot on goal of the second half, the Lions responded with the first goal of the match in the 47th minute to take a 1-0 lead. LMU scored again 21 minutes later to take a two-goal lead with 22 minutes to play.

The Pack, however, quickly answered back with a score of their own. Just 22 seconds after LMU's second goal of the night, Fong found the foot of Gronauer, who allowed Rich to place the ball in the back of the net.

LMU went off and running again 13 seconds after the Pack's score, converting its third goal of the night to extend the lead by two goals. The Pack looked for a late push by firing two shots in the final minutes, but the attempts were blocked and saved by LMU that allowed the Lions to seal the victory.

Nevada returns home to Mackay Stadium to start a two-match homestand starting Thursday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. against Northern Colorado. The match against Northern Colorado will be Beat the Heat/Faculty Appreciation Night, where the first 50 teachers/faculty will be given free T-shirts with a valid ID.
