Nevada soccer ends non-conference with win over Eastern Washington

RENO, Nev. - Nevada soccer used three first half goals to end the non-conference portion of the season with a 3-2 victory over Eastern Washington Sunday at Mackay Stadium.

Fifth year Luz Arreaga scored in her second straight match and collected her fifth goal of the season. Arreaga is the first Nevada player since 2015 (Lindsey Salcido) to score five goals in one season and is the first player in the last decade to score five goals by Sept. 17. She is now in the top 10 in program history for single season goals (5) career goals (9).

Sophomore Serene Gronauer added to Nevada's scoring with her first career goal while fifth year Gabby Brown came up with her third goal of the season. Sophomores Maddie Benson and Sydnie Fong assisted on the Pack's scoring, each getting their second assist of the season. Redshirt freshman Ally Larkin collected her first win as a collegiate goalkeeper.

Just like she did in Thursday's match against Northern Colorado, Arreaga's early offensive work allowed Nevada to get on the board early. Scoring in the eighth minute in Thursday's match, the Gilroy, California, native capitalized off a pass from Fong in the fourth minute and found the back of the net to give the Pack the early one-goal lead.

The Pack continued to push the offensive tempo in the first half, with Nevada extending its lead 2-0 just 12 minutes after its first score. Benson found Gronauer, an Iona transfer who made the team after a strong spring season, and the Las Vegas native sliced through the defense for the goal.

Brown entered the match in the 35th minute and made her immediate impact. Two minutes after coming in, Brown found the loose ball and fired a shot that found the back of the net that allowed Nevada to take a 3-0 lead going into the locker room.

Eastern Washington, however, would not go away quietly. After the Eagles converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute, Eastern Washington scored again seven minutes later that cut Nevada's lead to one.

The Eagles looked to capitalize off another shot on goal in the 73rd minute, but Larkin's leaping save kept Nevada in front. Nevada did not allow another shot to Eastern Washington for the final 17 minutes that allowed the Pack to take its second consecutive win.

Nevada starts Mountain West play on the road Thursday at Colorado State at 3 p.m.
