Nevada soccer’s duel in Moscow ends in draw

MOSCOW, Idaho - Nevada soccer's hard-fought battle at Idaho ended in a 1-1 draw Thursday at the Kibbie Dome.

Fifth year midfielder Luz Arreaga scored her third goal of the season in the 25th minute, her third straight match with a goal. She is the first Nevada player since 2018 (Payton Lieb) to score in three consecutive matches.

Kicking off the match by controlling the possession, Nevada fired three shots through the first 11 minutes to begin their offensive attack. It would be the Pack's fourth that gave Nevada the go-ahead lead.

Executing off a ball placed by sophomore defender Abigail Souza, Arreaga launched a hard shot from 10 yards out that deflected off the Idaho goalkeeper's hands and found its way to the back of the net. Idaho drew five first half corner kicks, but the Nevada defense prevented the Vandals from capitalizing and went into the locker room ahead 1-0.

The Vandals opened the second half by drawing three straight corner kicks that resulted in four shot opportunities. Nevada's defense once again weathered the corner kick storm by blocking a pair of Idaho's shots while goalkeeper Emily McCue saved another from finding the back of the net with 35 minutes to play.

Not making its first substitution until the 69th minute, Nevada still kept turning the tempo and remained ahead with 15 minutes to go. The Vandals came up with the equalizer goal in the 77th minute and McCue saved Idaho's final two shots on goal to keep the match even.

Nevada returns to Reno for its 2023 home opener at Mackay Stadium Sunday against UC Riverside at 11 a.m. Tickets for Sunday's home opener start at just $7 online and the first 75 students will receive DoughBoys Donuts.
