Freethy named Mountain West Player of the Week

RENO, Nev. - Nevada sophomore infielder JR Freethy was named Mountain West Player of the Week Monday for his performance over the Wolf Pack's weekend series victory over Air Force.

Over Nevada's four games last week, Freethy batted .538, going 7-for-13 with a double, a home run, and four RBIs. In the three games against Air Force, Freethy went 6-for-10 (.600), highlighting his weekend with a 3-for-5 performance in Saturday's 16-8 win, in which he hit the go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth inning.

Freethy's second home run of the season put the Pack ahead, 10-8, and was one of a season-high six homers for Nevada in the contest. The long ball capped Nevada's comeback from an early 8-1 deficit, as the Pack would end up scoring 15 unanswered runs on the way to the win.

In Sunday's rubber game, Freethy reached base in three of his four plate appearances, going 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. He scored one of the Pack's two runs in the fourth, giving Nevada a three-run cushion in its 6-3 series-clinching win.

Freethy's performance during the week upped his batting average to .325, along with his two home runs, five doubles, and 15 RBIs.

Nevada (15-19, 6-11 MW) moved to within 2.5 games of fourth place in the conference standings, which doubles as the final spot in May's Mountain West Championship, with the series win over Air Force. The Pack will play four on the road this week, beginning with a 4 p.m. non-conference contest at Santa Clara before resuming Mountain West play with a three-game weekend set at San Diego State.
