Pack begins heptathlon in first day of Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Nevada track and field multi's group started off competition on the first day of the Aztec Invitational with the first four events of the heptathlon, with freshman Johanna Haas earning a second-place finish in the 200 meters.

"It was a rough day dealing with the elements, but the ladies fought hard, and we had a few bright spots here and there," said multis group coach Scott Williamson. "We gained some valuable experience with such a young group made up of two freshman and a junior. We are looking forward to tomorrow and finishing out the first competition of the outdoor season on a positive note and hopefully adding some new PR's."

Haas's 200-meter time of 25.24 was two one-hundredths off her personal best of 26.22 from the indoor season. Her second-place finish in the event was only a little less than half a second behind Iowa State's Sydney Willits' first place finish of 24.98. The second-place finish for Haas in the event was the highest individual finish on the day for the Pack multis, to close out day one. Freshman Valeria Paez-Rueda would finish 12th (27.04) while junior Kate Kadrmas finished 16th (27.41).

The day started off with the 100-meter hurdles, all three Nevada multis placing in the top-10. Haas finished fifth (15.24), while Kadrmas finished ninth (15.72), and Paez-Rueda finished just behind Kadrmas in 10th (15.80).

Moving into the high jump, it was Paez-Rueda who secured a top-10 finish in the event with her height of 1.56 meters. Haas finished in 18th with a mark of 1.44 meters. The day ended with the last two events, the shot put and the 200 meters. In the shot put, Haas earned her third top-10 finish of the day, securing a sixth-place finish with a mark of 11.15 meters. Kadrmas would finish 10th, her second top-10 finish of the day, with her 10.55 meters mark, and Paez-Rueda fourteenth with her mark of 9.95 meters.

Heading into day two after four events, the Pack sit in fifth, 10th, and 17th place respectively, Haas leading the way with 2,835 points, Paez-Rueda with 2,662 points, and Kadrmas rounding out the trio with 1,993 points. The remaining three events include the long jump, the javelin throw, and the 800 meters, with the long jump kicking off day two at 9:15 a.m.
