RENO, Nev. - Nevada Baseball returns to Reno after over a week on the road, having completed a six-game trip Wednesday night in Corvallis, Ore.
The Pack opens up a stretch of 22 of its next 30 games at home, beginning with this weekend's three-game series against UNLV (5-10, 1-2 MW) in the baseball season's first installment of the Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union.
The first two games against the Rebels are set for Peccole Park, with Friday's opener scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch, and Saturday's game at 4:35 p.m.
Sunday, the series moves downtown to Greater Nevada Field, home of the Reno Aces, for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch.
All games against UNLV will be streamed on the Mountain West Network, and broadcast locally in Reno on KHIT 94.1 FM/1450 AM, and online through The Varsity Network app, with John Ramey on the call. Nevada Baseball alumnus Zak Basch will join Ramey on the call for Sunday's game at Greater Nevada Field.
ABOUT UNLV
UNLV (5-10, 1-2 MW) topped the Mountain West's preseason poll in February, but has stumbled out of the gate early on.
The Rebels swept three from Pacific in the first series of the campaign, but have since lost 10 of their next 12, including dropping two-of-three in its opening Mountain West series at San Diego State from March 3-5. Most recently, the Rebels dropped two straight at No. 7 Arkansas this week, falling in Wednesday's finale, 5-2.
The Rebels still can threaten at the plate, boasting five full-timers batting over .300. This quartet is led by Jacob Sharp, who sports a .423 average with 16 RBIs and a team co-leading three home runs.Alex Pimentel (.333) and Austin Kryszczuk (.308) also produce, each with three doubles and 16 RBIs.
On the bump, the Rebels pitching staff has a combined ERA of 7.78, with Joey Acosta its top starter at 1-0 with a 5.71 ERA and 18 strikeouts.
LAST TIME OUT
Nevada earned a split in a midweek two-gamer at Oregon State, capturing the opener, 5-1, before falling, 12-1, in Wednesday's finale. The split upped Nevada's record against Pac-12 competition to 2-1 on the season (previously a 3-2 win at USC, March 8).
Peyton Stumbo shut down his second Pac-12 opponent in as many weeks Tuesday, striking out a career-high eight batters and allowing just one run on six hits over six innings. Three relievers then combined to hold the Beavers scoreless, and strike out five, over the final three innings.
At the plate, four Wolf Pack batters had a two-hit game Tuesday, led by a pair of RBI single from
Jaxon Woodhouse and an RBI double by
Henry Strmecki.
Wednesday, despite the loss, the Pack got two-hit games from
Mason Hirata and Corvallis native
Taylor Holder.
MOMENTUM AGAINST UNLV
Nevada comes into this weekend's series against UNLV with some recent momentum against the Rebels. The Pack took two of three in Las Vegas in the only regular-season series between the teams last season, then sent the top-seeded Rebels packing in an elimination game at the Mountain West Championship last May in San Diego. In that 7-3 win, this Friday's starter,
Kade Morris, went 8.2 innings and held the Rebels to three runs and struck out five.
PICKING UP QUALITY WINS
Nevada has rebounded well from going 1-3 in its season-opening series at Abilene Christian, going 8-5 since. That record includes a solid 2-1 showing in games against Pac-12 competition. The Pack defeated USC, 3-2, March 8 in Los Angeles, before splitting a two-game set at Oregon State this past Tuesday and Wednesday. Nevada has two more games scheduled against Pac-12 teams this season, both on the road: April 10 at California and May 10 at Arizona.
MR. MIDWEEK (AGAIN!)
Junior right-hander
Peyton Stumbo has claimed the Wolf Pack's role of midweek starter, and his outings March 8 at USC and March 15 at Oregon State showed that the Wolf Pack could make some noise in its non-conference midweek action.
Against the Trojans, Stumbo struck out three and allowed just two runs on three hits over six innings. He picked up his first win of the season with the effort, as Nevada defeated USC, 3-2.
He followed that up with another big win Tuesday at Oregon State, striking out a career-high eight batters while allowing just one run on six hits over six innings.
