Weber State defeats Nevada in Wednesday road contest

OGDEN, Utah - Weber State defeated Nevada women's basketball 57-55 Wednesday Night at Dee Events Center.

Freshman guard Dymonique Maxie led Nevada with a career-high 12 points while junior guard Kaylee Borden tallied a season-high 11 points off the bench. Redshirt sophomore forward Natalie Lathrop led Nevada on the boards with a career-high eight rebounds to go with three blocks in her first career start.

The Pack jumped out to the early lead off a quick 6-0 scoring run to start the first quarter, with a pair of free throws by senior forward Lexie Givens keeping Nevada in front 10-7 with three minutes to play in the opening period. A layup and 3-pointer allowed Weber State to take the lead and the Wildcats managed to get the final two baskets of the first quarter to extend its lead.

Trading baskets to start the second quarter, Weber State stretched its lead to eight with a pair of baskets. Nevada, however, chipped away at the deficit thanks to a 3-pointer by Borden and a layup by sophomore forward Kennedy Lee to close the second quarter down by a possession.

Nevada tied the game at 26 to open the third quarter off a free throw from junior guard Audrey Roden and fastbreak layup from senior forward Lexie Givens, with Roden knocking down a pair of free throws to give Nevada its first lead since the opening minutes.

Weber State retook the advantage off a 3-pointer and extended its lead to double-digits, but free throws by Borden and a jumper from senior guard Gabby Giuffre before the buzzer made it a six-point game.

The Pack cut the deficit to four points with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter, but Weber State knocked down a 3-pointer to make it a seven-point game. Lathrop responded with a bucket and Giuffre knocked in a free throw to make it a five-point deficit, with Borden hitting a clutch 3-pointer that made it a one possession game.

Weber State missed two free throws and Nevada came up with the ball with four seconds left, but the halfcourt desperation shot was no good at the buzzer and resulted in a Weber State win.

Nevada goes on the road again to face Cal Saturday at 2 p.m.
