BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal knocked off Nevada women's basketball 76-49 Saturday afternoon at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley.
Junior guard Audrey Roden led Nevada in scoring with nine points while fifth year guard Claire Jacobs added six points.
After Roden tied the game 2-2 with a layup in the opening minute of the first quarter, the Golden Bears went on a 13-0 scoring run to stretch their early lead. Cal's defense forced Nevada into just 17 percent shooting through the first 10 minutes, allowing the Golden Bears to carry a double-digit lead.
A 3-pointer by Roden and a jumper by Jacobs on back-to-back possessions allowed Nevada to cut the deficit to single digits to start the second quarter. Cal, however, strung together four baskets from beyond the arc to maintain a double-digit advantage and go up by 15 into the locker room.
Cal continued to execute its offense, shooting over 53 percent in the third quarter and drilled three 3-pointers to go up by 26 heading into the final 10 minutes. Nevada continued to fight despite being down, using a 3-pointer by junior guard Kaylee Borden and a jumper by senior forward Lexie Givens to start the final period.
The Pack got a spark from freshman guard Rakiyah Jackson in the fourth quarter, who grabbed a career-high three rebounds in just five minutes of action. Jackson scored her first collegiate basket with 2:48 left in the fourth quarter.
Despite the fight, the deficit was too much for Nevada to overcome and Cal managed to secure the win on its home floor.
Nevada is back in action at Lawlor Events Center Saturday, Dec. 16, playing Stanislaus State at 1 p.m. in its annual Holiday Game.
