COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After leading the Nevada Men's Basketball team to victories over Temple and TCU at the 2023 Diamond Head Classic in which he averaged 23.5 points per and 4.0 rebounds per game, Jarod Lucas has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week for the second time in his career.
Lucas was sensational in the Diamond Head Classic for the Pack, and he was particularly exceptional in Nevada's first and second round victories.
In the Pack's win over Temple this past Thursday, Lucas scored a game-high 22 points on 8-18 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-3 at the free throw line. Lucas buried three shots from behind the arc throughout the game, and the fifth-year senior finished the contest with an incredible game-high plus/minus of +36 in 31 minutes of action.Â
Lucas had a dominant second half against Temple, helping Nevada outscore the Owls by 17 points over the final 20 minutes. Lucas posted 16 second half points on 6-12 shooting from the field and 3-8 from behind the arc, propelling the Pack to a 45-point period.
Lucas had another sensational performance in Nevada's second round victory of the Diamond Head Classic over Big-12 foe TCU, scoring a game-high 25 points on 5-9 shooting from the field, 2-5 from behind the arc, and a perfect 13-13 at the free throw line. Lucas also matched a career-high by pulling down six rebounds, three of which came on the offensive glass, and he posted a plus/minus of +15 in 35 minutes of playing time.
Nevada went on to win the 2023 Diamond Head Classic, defeating Georgia Tech 72-64 in the Championship game and Lucas was named MVP of the tournament for his outstanding play. The Pack will now return home to face Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the season, as Nevada will aim to enter Mountain West play with an exceptional record of 13-1.Â
