Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jacobs’ game-winning basket lifts Nevada women’s basketball to overtime win

DENVER - Behind fifth year guard Claire Jacobs' 14 second half points and game-winning basket with one second left in overtime, Nevada women's basketball collected the come from behind win over Central Arkansas 67-65 Saturday in the University of Denver Classic.

Jacobs led Nevada offensively with a season-high 18 points to go with two blocks and two steals. Senior forward Lexie Givens added a season-high 16 points and a season-high nine rebounds and five blocks, good for 10th on the program's single game blocks list in program history.

Trailing by eight in the first half, Nevada scored six unanswered points in the second quarter to make it a one-possession game. Central Arkansas, however, responded with a pair of buckets to move ahead by six after the first 20 minutes.

After Givens led Nevada's scoring in the first half, it was Jacobs' turn in the second.

Eight straight points by the two-time All-Atlantic 10 player allowed Nevada to take the advantage in the third quarter. After a layup and 3-pointer by Central Arkansas, the Pack cut the deficit in half thanks to a late 3-pointer by freshman guard Izzy Sullivan before the end of the period.

Inserted into the game to start the fourth quarter, senior guard Tiffany Siu made an immediate impact. After Jacobs hit a jumper to open the fourth quarter, Siu converted a fastbreak layup while drawing a foul following a Nevada steal. Siu knocked in the free throw and freshman guard Dymonique Maxie knocked in a jumper after getting the defensive rebound to give Nevada a four-point edge.

Maxie hit a free throw following a pair of Central Arkansas layups to maintain a two-point lead for Nevada, but the Sugar Bears answered with another layup to tie the game at 54 with just over three minutes to play in regulation.

Jacobs quickly gave Nevada's lead back to the Pack off a 3-pointer before Central Arkansas responded with a 3-pointer of their own on the next possession. Jacobs would get the opportunity to take the last shot, but the good look just missed to force overtime.

Givens opened overtime with a jumper before a 3-pointer by Central Arkansas gave the Sugar Bears the lead, with a steal from junior guard Audrey Roden leading to a layup that allowed Nevada to retake the advantage. Central Arkansas drained a 3-pointer with just over a minute left in overtime to swing the advantage before a jumper by senior guard Gabby Giuffre tied it up again.

Following a missed shot by Central Arkansas, Jacobs once again took the last shot and seized the moment. Driving from the top of the key and into the paint, Jacobs went up and under to sink the final shot and give Nevada its second win in the Denver Classic.

Nevada returns to Lawlor Events Center Wednesday to take on San Diego at 1 p.m.
