Pack completes weekend sweep with 3-1 victory over San Diego State

RENO, Nev. – Nevada volleyball earned a 3-1 victory over San Diego State at Virginia Street Gym Saturday afternoon to complete the weekend sweep and move to 6-13 overall and 2-6 in Mountain West play.
 
Highlighting Nevada's match, Bella Snyder and Jordan Schwartz registered hitting percentages of .667 and .467 respectively. Snyder had 11 kills from 15 attempts while Schwartz had with eight kills from 15 attempts as well as recording six block assists and one solo block. Tehya Maeva tallied 41 assists and Sia Liilii earned a reception percentage of 1.000 % from 35 attempts.  
 
Coming to Reno, San Diego State had a 7-11 overall record, sitting 2-5 in Mountain West play and are on a three-match losing streak after falling to Air Force (2-3) and New Mexico (1-3) at home, while also coming up short in Fresno against the Bulldogs (2-3) Thursday evening. The Aztecs hold a 15-7 record versus Nevada in their 21 all-time matchups, dating back to the 2011 season. Most recently, San Diego State has won four straight against the Wolf Pack before Saturday's contest.
 
The Aztecs went up 10-6 early in the first before Nevada came within two on a 5-2 run with kills by Clarke, Liilii, Snyder, and Schwartz. The Pack were able to then tie it up at 14-14 with a block by Schwartz and Liilii. The Pack earned their first lead of the set going up 17-15 after back-to-back kills from Snyder, forcing San Diego State to call a timeout. Nevada kept the lead until the Azteca came within one after a block by Reagan Merk and Julia Haynie, bringing the score to 20-19. Three back-to-back Nevada plays allowed the Pack to go up 23-19 after kills from Schwartz and Snyder and a service ace by Emilie Parker. Nevada reached set point on a block by Schwartz and Clarke to eventually earn the set 25-21 after a service error by the Aztecs. In the first set, Snyder had a hitting percentage of .778 in the first with seven kills from nine attacks.
 
Continuing the momentum, the Pack went up 7-3 over the Aztecs early in the second to force a San Diego State timout. The Aztecs came within one on a 2-0 rally with a kill from Amber Keen to end the play 9-8. San Diego State tied the set and ultimately went up by one at 10-9 after a called attack error by McLaughlin. The Aztecs regained a two-point lead after a 4-2 run with two kills from Taylor Underwood and two attack errors by the Pack going up 17-15. San Diego State extended their lead, going up by five, forcing Nevada to call a timeout as the Aztecs reached the 20-point threshold, only needing five more to secure the set. The Pack came within four after a 3-0 run put the score at 22-18 by a kill and service ace from Liilii, as well as a called attack error on San Diego State's Haynie. Nevada came within two after SDSU reached set point, but Aztecs took the second set to tie the match 1-1.
 
Nevada saw a five-point lead after a 4-1 run over San Diego State with kills from McLaughlin, Clarke, and Schwartz to kick off the third set. The Pack went up by 10, their largest lead of the match in the middle of the set. The Aztecs tried to answer back, but Nevada reached the 20-point mark as they continued to battle to end the set. Nevada was one point away from reaching set point before the Aztecs earned back-to-back kills from Cara Braun. A McLaughlin kill put the Pack at set point, ultimately earning the victory in the third set, dominating the Aztecs 25-14 to go up 2-1 on the match. This 25-14 set win marks the first time the Pack has won a set by 10 or more this season.
 
The fourth set started off hot, both teams not letting the other go up by more than one point. By the middle of the set, the score remained close with the Aztecs up by two 15-13. A service error and a Schwartz kill caused the Pack to tie it up at 15-15. Nevada forced a San Diego State timeout after a 3-0 run gave the Pack a 18-15 lead. San Diego State closed the gap, coming within one at 20-19 to force a Nevada timeout. The Aztecs called their final timeout of the match after the Pack went up another two points, extending their lead 22-19. The Pack reached set point after a kill by Maeva and a kill from McLaughlin secured the match for Nevada, allowing them to take the 3-1 victory over the Aztecs and complete the weekend sweep.

Nevada volleyball go on the road to Wyoming Thursday, Oct. 19, with the match scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. The Pack will then return to Virginia Street Gym Saturday, Oct. 21 to take on Colorado State at 12 p.m.
