RENO, Nev. -Â Monday's match between Nevada and No. 64 Denver came down to the final match, and the Pack was denied the upset as the Pioneers prevailed, 4-3.
Denver (8-6) rallied for the final two points to clinch, getting a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 win from Matt Summers over
Delmas N'Tcha at No. 3 to draw even at 3-3, then Nico Herrero Cuesta's 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 win over
Juan Batalla to end it.
The three-and-a-half hour match featured four singles matches going the full three sets, with Nevada players coming back from dropping the opening set to force a third and deciding. Eight sets in singles play required seven games to win, with two going to tiebreaker, including one doubles match.
The Pack tandem of
Loris Zisswiller and
Satchel Benn came out victorious in that match to clinch the doubles point. The pair defeated Peter Sallay and Charlie Miller, 7-6 (3), to give the Pack (12-6) the early advantage.
The teams split the first two singles points, in the only two matches to end in straight sets.
Daniel Dudockin rolled past Charlie Miller, 6-4, 6-0, for the opening point for Nevada, then Denver's James Davis beat
Matheo Coupu at No. 1, 7-5, 6-4.
Satchel Benn captured the only other singles match for the Pack, fighting back from down a set to claim two tiebreakers in a 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory over Sallay at No. 4.
Nevada will return to action in two weeks, opening Mountain West play with road duals at Boise State (April 1) and Utah State (April 3).
