Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Santa Clara knocks off Nevada

RENO, Nev. - Nevada women's basketball fell short to Santa Clara 66-56 on Sunday at Lawlor Events Center.

Graduate student Megan Ormiston led Nevada with a career-high 26 points and 11 rebounds, her first collegiate double-double. Junior Lexie Givens added a season-high 17 points while junior Alyssa Jimenez grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds.

The Pack jumped out to an early 10-6 lead in the first quarter, but three unanswered baskets by Santa Clara allowed the Broncos to retake the lead. A 3-pointer allowed Santa Clara to move ahead by nine points, with a layup from Givens cutting the deficit to six after the first 10 minutes.

A 3-pointer and jumper allowed Santa Clara to take a double digit lead late in the second quarter, but another late layup by Givens allowed the Pack to trail by nine points going into the locker room.

Nevada came out of the gates blazing in the third quarter, responding with two quick baskets that cut the Santa Clara lead down to five. Santa Clara, however, responded by pushing the offensive tempo and stretched its lead back out to double digits halfway through the third quarter.

The Pack cut the deficit to three points with 10 minutes to go, but Santa Clara kept the lead at bay and remained ahead by double figures to end the fourth quarter.

Nevada wraps up non-conference play in Maui, Hawaii, taking on Oregon State on Saturday.
