RENO, NEV. – Earning a Nevada all-time mark, ranking top of the Mountain West, and doing that all in your first ever collegiate meet will surely earn some recognition. 

Maria Milani, who competed at the Dr. MLK Collegiate Invitational in her first collegiate meet, has been named MW Track and Field Women's Freshman of the Week. The Argentina native earned this honor for finishing the triple jump with a ninth place mark of 12.06 meters. 

This distance moved Milani into fifth all-time at Nevada, which would pass Sherena Smith's 2007 mark of 12.00m. Milani is the most recent Wolf Pack athlete to move into the top-5 in the indoor triple jump since Brittany Graves did it in 2018 (2nd). Milani also currently ranks second in the conference in the triple jump. The only MW athlete ahead of Milani is Wyoming's Aumni Ashby, who has a mark of 12.15m. 

Milani also finished with the top placement out of the Pack athletes in the long jump at the Dr. MLK Collegiate Invitational. Her mark of 5.45m was good enough for a 15th place finish. The distance also puts Milani at 13th in the MW for the event. 

Milani and the track team will not compete this weekend and will be back looking for even more success when they compete in the Washington State Invitational from Feb. 3-5.
