Reno, Nev. - The Nevada volleyball team falls on first day of the UC Davis tournament against the host team and Santa Clara this Friday. The Pack got swept 3-0 in both games.Â
The Pack had a great start against the Aggies in all sets but was not able to hold it, which led to the score of set one 25-22, set two 25-23, and set three 25-16.Â
In the second game of the day against Santa Clara, Nevada struggled offensively in the beginning but it was able to improve in the last two sets. Final scores of the game were 25-13, 25-19, and 25-15.
Nevada 0, UC Davis 3
Junior Sydney Petersen led the Pack with 11 kills and a .261 hitting percentage. Andrea Alcaraz once again led the team in assists (33) while senior Kaila Spevak led the team in digs (20).Â
Nevada started the match behind the Aggies but was able to tie the game in 18-18 after a service ace by Spevak, a kill by freshman Sia Liilii and a kill by Petersen. A kill by UC Davis closed the set 25-22. Petersen finished the set leading the match with 6 kills.Â
The Pack was able to control the first half of the set until the Aggies tied the game in 9-9. A great sequence of kills by Nevada offense was able to keep the lead until the Aggies took the lead in 23-23 and closing the set 25-23 on a service ace. Kyla Waiters was a decisive player at the end of the set, and lead the team with 5 kills, together with sophomore Reka Monteleone.Â
In the final set, the Pack was not able to continue the momentum offensively from set two. The Aggies started the set ahead in 10-7. A sequence of errors by Nevada gave UC Davis a six-point lead that the Pack was not able to recover, closing the game in 25-16.
Nevada 0 , Santa Clara 3
The Pack was led by sophomore Reka Monteleone with 8 kills, while freshman Sia Liilii had a .545 hitting percentage. Junior Andre Alcaraz finished the game with 19 assists.Â
Santa Clara started the game with a four-point run ahead of the Pack and controlled the set since the beginning. Monteleone led the Pack with three kills and a .273 hitting percentage. Redshirt senior Chelsea Vaughan scored the service ace in this set.
The Pack was able to find more rhythm in the offense in set two, scoring 15 kills and holding a .333 hitting percentage as a team. Nevada saved three set points thanks to Freshman Sia Liilii who was the leader of the Pack with five kills, followed by senior, Kyla Waiters with four kills.
Continuing the momentum from the second set, Waiters puts Nevada on the board with a kill and is able to hold the Broncos. Santa Clara creates a five-point lead and the Pack is not able to catch up. Junior Sydney Petersen was the leader of the Pack for the set with three kills.Â
