Reno, Nev. - The Nevada swim and dive team finishes the alumni weekend this Saturday morning. On Friday, the team concluded the silver and blue scrimmage with the silver team winning 61-50.
The meet started with a win from the silver team on the 200 medley relay. In the following event,
Wiktoria Samula secured the second win for the silver team on the 75 breaststroke. Continuing the momentum for the silver team, JosienWijkhuijs won the 75 backstroke. Because the silver team was the winner of the 200 medley relay, they had the right to chose the next event, deciding to go with the 300 free.
Mariana Vignoli was the winner for the silver team on the 300 free. Winning the first event for the blue team was
Donna dePolo in the 75 butterfly. Securing the second win for the blue team was diver Isabel Vazquez on the 1-meter diving event. Following the diving, it was the 400 free relay, that was won by the silver team. The silver team was again able to choose what stroke the skins event would be, which it was decided to be freestyle. On the skin race, the top four, two of each team, we're on a 50 freestyle race, and the top two moved on to the next round.
Caitlyn McHugh and
Colette Berkenfield, went on a head-to-head race, with McHugh coming out on the top for the blue team.
Coach
Brendon Bray was excited about the team performance. "We had a great start to the season." Coach Bray says, "Several of the race that we did today were better than the in season duel last year. I think we have a lot to look forward to this year and I'm excited to see them race next week."
On Saturday, the alumni came back to the Lombardi pool to swim with the current team. The Olympic silver medalist Limin Liu (Sydney 2000) and Olympic bronze medalist, Krysta Palmer (Tokyo 2021) were present in the event and were able to give some encouraging words to the current team that is about to start their run to the Mountain West Championship this next week.
The Nevada swim team will go on the road, and start their season at the San Jose State relay meet on Sep. 23.
