JaVale McGee becomes first Nevada Athletics alumnus to win Olympic Gold

RENO, Nev. – JaVale McGee became Nevada Athletics' first alumnus to capture Olympic Gold Friday night, as the USA Basketball Men's Olympic Team defeated France, 87-82, in Tokyo.

McGee appeared in four of the team's six games in the Olympic tournament, averaging 6.3 points while shooting 76.9 percent (10-for-13) from the field.

It is the second Olympic Gold Medal among current and former members of the Nevada Men's Basketball program, joining head coach Steve Alford, a member of the 1984 Olympic Champion squad.

Overall, McGee, who played for the Wolf Pack from 2006-08, becomes the fourth Nevada Athletics alumnus to earn an Olympic medal, joining diver Krysta Palmer (bronze, USA, 3-meter springboard, Tokyo 2020), Limin Liu (silver, China, 100 fly, Atlanta 1996), and Lisé Mackie (bronze, Australia, 800 free relay, Atlanta 1996).

McGee also earns the unique distinction of become a second-generation Olympic Gold Medalist. His mother, Pamela McGee, was part of the gold medal-winning women's basketball team at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

Nevada alumni earned two Olympic medals in Tokyo, as diver Krysta Palmer earned bronze in 3-meter springboard.
