Nevada Volleyball opens season at Idaho Tournament

RENO, Nev. - Nevada opens the season at the University of Idaho Tournament, facing Portland and Grand Canyon on Friday, and the host team Idaho on Saturday.

The match against Portland is set for 10 a.m. and it will be the fourth match between the teams with the latest being in 2015; the Pack currently has one win against the Pilots. Following this match, the Pack will take Grand Canyon at 7 p.m. This marks the second time the two have played each other. 

On Saturday, Nevada plays the host team Idaho at 10 a.m. The last time the Pack faced the Vandals was in 2013. The teams currently hold an all-time record of six, which Nevada holds four wins. The match will be streamed by ESPN+ and live stats are going to be available through the Idaho Vandals website for all matches. 

BACK IN ACTION

Nevada is back in action after a match against Fresno State on April 1. The Pack finished the season with a 3-12 score overall record, and it is looking to improve this upcoming season.

UPCOMING

The Pack will continue on the road to play at the UC Davis Tournament Sept. 3-4, with matches against UC Davis, Santa Clara, and San Francisco. In the following week, Nevada travels to Berkeley Sept. 10-11 for the Cal Tournament, facing Cal, Butler, and North Dakota State. The Wolf Pack makes its 2021 home debut at the Virginia Street Gym Sept. 16-18, hosting Sacramento State and CSUN for the Nevada Classic Tournament.

THE NEW KIDS

The Pack welcomed five freshmen, including Sophie Mangold (Powell, Ohio), Mary Fonoimoana (Laie, Hawai'i), Sydney Wyman (Auberry, Calif.), Sia Liilii (Halawa, Hawai'i), and Lina Strand (Reno, Nev.). Mangold will add depth to the setter position, joining junior Andrea Alcaraz and redshirt senior Chelsea Vaughan. Fonoimoana and Wyman will add depth and join Sydney Petersen and Savanna Maker as middle blockers. Liilii is an addition to the outside hitters, while Strand will join the senior Kaila Spevak, junior Mandalay Rennon, and sophomore Lexi Applebach. 

HOMETOWN SQUAD

Joining the Reno natives senior, Kaila Spevak (McQueen HS), and sophomores Alyssa Zuro (Damonte Ranch), and Lexi Applebach (Damonte Ranch) is Lina Strand (Reno HS).
Strand is a four-year letter winner. She helped her team to win the Regional Championship in the 2018-2019 season. With her performance, Strand was selected to be a member of the 2018-2019 First Team All-League. 

THE RETURN OF THE PACK 

Sophomore Reka Monteleone returns to continue her success. As a freshman, Monteleone established herself as a leader of the Pack in kills and service aces with 142, and 21 points. Junior middle blocker Sydney Petersen, after putting herself into the record book as a freshman, Petersen, continues to lead the Pack in blocks with 67 points.
