INDIANAPOLIS - Nevada Diving alumna and volunteer assistant coach
Krysta Palmer nabbed a second berth to the Tokyo Olympic Games Saturday, topping the 3-meter springboard field at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials with a final score of 1011.95.
Palmer qualified for her first event at the Tokyo Games, women's synchronized 3-meter springboard, Thursday night with partner Alison Gibson.
The Carson City native entered Saturday's individual 3-meter springboard final in the top spot, and her superb start to the five-round final left no doubt that she would grab one of the two automatic Olympic bids. Palmer paced the field with an average score of 71.36 over her five dives, nearly five points better than the closest competitor, and had her bid sealed by the end of the fourth round, sitting 89.0 points clear of third place.
Palmer is the seventh Olympian in Nevada Swimming and Diving history, and the first to represent Team USA. Other program Olympians include Natalia Pulido (Spain 1992), Lise Mackie (Australia, 1992-96), Chavisa Thaveesupsoonthorn (Thailand, 2004-08), May Ooi (Singapore 1992), Limin Liu (China, 1996-2000) and Diana Sokolowska (Poland, 2012).
Palmer competed for the Pack from 2012-16, earning two NCAA All-American honorable mention accolades and two Mountain West Diver of the Year awards. In addition, Palmer compiled four Mountain West titles and competed in two NCAA Championships during her junior and senior campaigns. As a senior, Palmer was named Nevada's 2015-16 Ruth Russell Award winner, which is given annually to the school's top senior female student-athlete.
The 2021 Tokyo Olympics will run from July 23-August 8. The women's synchronized 3-meter springboard final is currently scheduled for 11 p.m. PT Saturday, July 24 , and the women's 3-meter springboard from July 29-August 2, in the Pacific Time Zone.
