Jensen and Shrum named Nevada's top scholar athletes

Williams and Orito earned Exline Awards

RENO, Nev. – Softball's Julia Jensen and baseball's Dillan Shrum have been named the University of Nevada's Scholar-Athletes of the Year, and Tyson Williams from the football program and soccer's Amane Orito were named the winners of the Exline Award, the Wolf Pack athletics department announced today.

Jensen earned Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in the final season of her accomplished career at Nevada. She has served as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the past two season and graduated Summa Cum Laude last fall with a degree in neuroscience. The softball pitcher will pursue a postgraduate degree in epidemiology next year at the University of Colorado.

The Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Shrum is a senior first baseman for the Pack. He graduated last fall with a degree in biology with an emphasis in cell and molecular biology. Shrum intends to go to medical school after his playing career and wants to be a surgeon.

The Exline Award is named after Nevada's former longtime Faculty Athletics Representative, Dr. Chris Exline, and honors the top male and female student-athletes who have shown the most growth or upward progress through their academic careers.

Williams, who will return for another season this fall for Nevada, has shown growth throughout academic career and is now set to graduate later this year with a degree in human development and family studies. The safety has steadily grown his academic record and raised his grade-point average to nearly 3.0 over the course of his time at Nevada.

Orito, who hails from Japan, worked through significant language barriers for four English as a second language courses in her first two semesters. Now a fluent English speaker, she's built a GPA over 3.0 and will graduate this year with a degree in human development and family studies.

The awards were voted on by members of the department's intercollegiate services unit and administration.
