RENO, Nev. – The Nevada women's soccer team (1-6-2 MW) battled rigorously through 90 minutes of play to a 2-1 win against in-state rival, UNLV (5-3-1 MW). The victory marked Nevada's first win against UNLV since joining the Mountain West and second overall. The Pack earned 1.5 points and a series split in the Silver State Series presented by IBEW Local 401 and Nevada Donor Network.
The Pack started off the scoring late in the first half. Sophomore
Lizzy Hairston found the back of the net off of a corner kick from
Hannah Souza in the 33
rd minute. The goal marked Hairston's first of the season.
Strong pressure and scoring chances followed for UNLV. After drawing a free kick, the Rebels connected on a chance in front of the net in the 41
st minute, tying the game before heading to intermission.
The Pack and Rebels stayed knotted up 1-1 throughout the second half. It was not until the 77
th minute that a shot from sophomore
Kendall Riley ricocheted off the crossbar. Junior
Casey Crawford connected on the rebound to give the Pack the 2-1 lead.
The Nevada defense out lasted tons of pressure from the Rebels in the final 12 minutes of play. Goalkeeper
Kendal Stovall recorded 4 saves in her first win of the season.
The Pack will return to Mackay Stadium on Sunday, April 11
th at 1:00 P.M. for the season finale against San Diego State.
