RENO, Nev. - Nevada women's tennis played its first home match in over a month Friday, but dropped a 4-0 decision to New Mexico to begin the weekend.
The doubles point came down to the wire between the teams, with the No. 2 doubles match between Nevada's
Milka Genkova and
Mathilde Sarcelet and New Mexico's Yue Lin Chen and Myu Kagayama knotted at 5-5. But it would be the New Mexico tandem which would take the match, 7-5, and the first point of the dual.
Selina Turulja and
Cristina Moll Alles continued their strong doubles play of late, defeating Hsiang-Wen Huang and Satoho Toriumi, 6-4, at No. 3.
Singles play began evenly, as the teams split the first sets among the six matches. Genkova (at No. 1),
Anastasia Luneva (No. 2), and Moll Alles (No. 4) each jumped out to a one-set advantage, however, the Pack (5-10, 0-9 MW) would need to take a lead in a fourth match to get the inside track.
But New Mexico (7-9, 2-6 MW) did not give the Pack any break in the other three matches, capturing straight-sets wins at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 to clinch the dual.
Nevada will close the season Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against Air Force. The Falcons were defeated, 4-1, by Fresno State in Friday's first dual.
