Series Preview: Air Force

RENO, Nev. - After a series cancelation against New Mexico last weekend, the Nevada baseball team is back in action this weekend for a Mountain West series at Air Force.

The three-game series at Falcon Field in Colorado Springs will feature a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m. PT, and a single game on Sunday that will start at 11 a.m. PT.

This marks the second series between the Wolf Pack and Falcons this season as the two teams met in Reno earlier this month. Air Force took that series in Reno with a sweep of the doubleheader on April 2, but Nevada was able to avoid the sweep the next day, winning the series finale by the final of 15-9. The bats came alive in that win for the Wolf Pack as the team totaled 23 hits in the ball game, the most by the Pack in a single game since 2004. For the Falcons in that series it was a lot of late game heroics as Air Force launched a go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth in game one to win, 2-1, and erased a 4-3 deficit in the ninth in game two on a grand slam to win that game, 7-5.

Since the first time these two teams met at the beginning of this month Nevada has played just five games, losing three games last weekend due to COVID-19 issues within New Mexico's program. During the last five games the Wolf Pack is 2-3, but took two out of three on the road from conference-leading San Diego State, and played No. 3 Texas to a pair of one-game contests, also on the road. Dario Gomez was named the MW Player of the Week after the SDSU series as he batted .571 in three games and led the Wolf Pack with eight hits, including two doubles and a triple, posted five RBI and scored six runs during that series.

Air Force is 3-5 since it last played the Wolf Pack, but five of those eight games came in non-conference action. The Falcons dropped a series to Fresno State, before losing two at Kansas and followed that up with a 2-1 series win at Dallas Baptist this past weekend.

Both Nevada and Air Force enter this weekend with a 7-8 record in league play and are both tied for third place in the conference standings. With the season beginning to wind down, each series has huge implications down the stretch.

ON THE AIR
Josh Suchon will have the call in Northern Nevada on CBS Sports Radio 94.1 FM and 1450 AM with a 20 minute pregame show prior to first pitch for all three games. Fans can also tune in to listen to Suchon's broadcast online at TuneIn.com or via the TuneIn app.

All three games can also be seen live on the Mountain West Network.

POP-FLYS
-Nevada and Air Force are tied for third place in the MW standings at 7-8
-It will be nine days in between games for the Wolf Pack since it played at Texas last week
-Nevada nearly upset No. 3 Texas last week, losing a pair of one-run games
-Nevada ranks ahead of the Falcons in the three major categories (batting, pitching, fielding)
-Tyler Bosetti ranks first in the MW and 11th nationally with 13 doubles
-As a team, the Pack is 17th in the nation in doubles per game (2.20)

PACK TAKES DOWN NO. 1
After a split doubleheader against San Diego State, the Nevada baseball team took the series with a 5-3 victory in the series finale.

The win solidified the Wolf Pack's first Mountain West series victory on the road this season, and also handed the Aztecs their first conference series loss of the season. Nevada improved to 10-13 overall at the time with the win and is now 7-8 in league play. For San Diego State, which entered the series with the conference's best record and the national lead in team batting average, fell to 17-8 overall and 12-6 in MW action at the time of the series.

In the series finale win, true freshman Cam Walty earned the first win of his collegiate career after tossing 5.1 innings and allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out a season-high five batters. The Nevada bullpen shut down the potent Aztecs offense and held them scoreless for the final three frames of the ball game. During the win on Saturday the Wolf Pack scored eight runs between the seventh and eighth innings to erase a 6-2 deficit and earn a 10-6 win.

SEEING DOUBLE
Tyler Bosetti has been a doubles machine this season. No really, Bosetti has established himself as one of the best two-bag hitters in all of college baseball this season. Entering the series at Air Force this weekend, Bosetti's 13 doubles ranks him first in the Mountain West and 11th in the nation. He's been particularly hot as of late with six doubles in his last eight games. Bosetti is in the midst of one of the best offensive seasons of his collegiate career as he is batting .305 in 25 games played with those 13 doubles, a triple, a home run, 15 runs scored and 15 RBI.

GOMEZ ON FIRE
Newcomer Dario Gomez, a redshirt sophomore transfer from San Joaquin Delta Junior College, has seemingly adjusted to Division I baseball just fine. Gomez has started in center field for the Wolf Pack in all 25 games this season and leads the team in nearly every offensive category. Not only does Gomez lead the team in most offensive categories, but he ranks highly in the Mountain West in each as well.

Against Fresno State, Gomez collected eight RBI in game two alone. It was the most RBI by a Wolf Pack player in a single game since Mike Echavia posted seven against New Mexico in 2017. It also marked the most by a Mountain West player in a single game this season and second-most in the nation. In that second game against the Bulldogs, Gomez was 4-for-5 with those eight RBI, three runs scored, a double and a home run.

SHRUM DOG MILLIONAIRE
Dillan Shrum is taking advantage of his final collegiate season. Despite playing in just 16 games so far, Shrum is batting a career-high .377 and has produced 23 hits, which ranks fifth on the team. He's been particularly productive with extra base hits as 11 of his 23 hits this season have gone for extra bases, including nine doubles, a triple and a home run. He has also driven in 13 runs and scored five runs himself. Additionally Shrum's defense has been perfect, making 110 putouts with two assists and zero errors through 16 games.

CONFERENCE PLAY HALFWAY THROUGH
To date, Nevada has played 15 conference games but did lose three league contests last weekend due to COVID-19 issues within New Mexico's program. Including this upcoming weekend at Air Force, the Wolf Pack has 16 Mountain West games remaining on its schedule. Six of those 16 league games will be against the top two programs in the conference as Nevada will host MW-leading San Diego State next weekend, and will host second place UNLV the following weekend. Entering the weekend the Wolf Pack sits in a tie for third place in the league standings with Air Force at 7-8. Everyone in the conference is chasing San Diego State, which has a 14-7 record in MW games.

UP NEXT
Nevada will return home to Don Weir Field at Peccole Park for back-to-back home series, beginning next weekend on April 30 and May 1 for three games against conference-leading San Diego State.
