Pack falls in quarterfinals of MW Championship

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The fifth-seeded Nevada women's basketball team dropped a 70-46 decision to No. 4 Fresno State Monday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Championship.

Nevada started the game strong, erasing an early 8-2 deficit with a 10-2 run that gave the Wolf Pack the lead with under five to play in the first. Senior Nia Alexander was hot out of the gate, hitting three of her first four shot attempts. After that run though the offense went cold and the Bulldogs took advantage, building up an 18-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Fresno State begin to put some space between itself and the Wolf Pack. The Bulldogs defense kicked in and held Nevada to just 25 percent shooting in the quarter, while the offense managed to bump the lead into double figures, 33-20 at the half. Fresno State continued to play strong defense and watched its lead grow to a game-high 27 early in the fourth. The Wolf Pack fought and clawed the entire game, embarking on a 14-2 run midway through the fourth that cut the lead down to 15, getting all but one of those 14 points from junior Amaya West. The deficit though was too large to overcome with just a few minutes remaining in the game, handing the win to Fresno State.

West and Alexander tied for the team lead in scoring as both of them poured in 15 points. Megan Ormiston and Leta Otuafi tied for the team rebounding lead with seven each. Trips to the free throw line favored the Bulldogs, which went 16-for-23 from the foul line to Nevada's 6-for-8 day.

The Wolf Pack finished the season at 13-9 overall, its first winning record since the 2017-18 season.
