ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Nevada baseball team dropped the series finale contest at New Mexico on Sunday, 5-1, giving the series win to the Lobos.
New Mexico (8-11, 6-6 MW) plated all five runs in the bottom of the fifth, which proved to be the difference maker in the outcome of Sunday's series finale. In that frame the Lobos collected five hits and took advantage of a wild pitch, a walk and two batters who were hit by the pitch to score those five runs. The big blow in the inning came with the bases loaded and UNM's Kyler Castillo hit a bases clearing double that put the Lobos up 4-1. The next batter for New Mexico then drove in Castillo on a triple to left field that scored the game's final run.
The Wolf Pack (7-10, 4-5 MW) scored its lone run in the top of the first inning. After
Jacob Stinson drew a walk to lead off the game,
Joshua Zamora reached on a hit by pitch putting two runners on with no outs. Later in the inning freshman
Landon Wallace blooped a single to right field that scored Stinson for the Pack's only run of the game.
Nevada was limited to just three hits in the game, getting the RBI single from Wallace and a pair of singles by
Dario Gomez.
Owen Sharts was dealt the loss after he threw 6.0 innings and was charged with all five runs in the fifth. After Sharts departed after six innings the Pack bullpen of
Jake Jackson and
Shane O'Malley gave up just one hit in the final two innings of work.
Nevada returns home to Don Weir Field at Peccole Park for a three-game series against Air Force this weekend. The Wolf Pack and Falcons will play a doubleheader this Friday and a single game on Saturday.
