Walk-off home run pushes USC past Nevada

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth pushed USC past Nevada in game two of the three game series Saturday afternoon.

With one on and one out, and the Wolf Pack leading 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth, USC's Jamal O'Guinn drove the ensuing pitch on a 3-1 count over the wall in left field to win the game for the Trojans. USC has won the first two games of this series by two runs or less with the series finale coming up on Sunday.

It was looking good for the Wolf Pack in the later innings of the ball game as Nevada broke up a perfect game by USC starter Chandler Champlain in the top of the seventh inning. Champlain had yet to have a Wolf Pack batter reach base until Tyler Bosetti lined a double to center field with one out. The next Nevada batter, Dario Gomez, then drove in himself and Bosetti on his team-leading third home run of the season to get the Wolf Pack on the board and quickly within one run. Saturday's designated hitter Landon Wallace then reached on a single and was brought around all the way from first to score on a double deep in the right field corner from Wyatt Tilley that tied the game at 3-3 and chased Champlain from the game. All together the Wolf Pack strung together three runs on five hits and had all of the momentum on its side.

With the game still tied 3-3, Tyler Cochran entered the game on the mound in the eighth and worked out of a jam with two runners on base that sent the game into the ninth all knotted up. Momentum was still on the side of the Wolf Pack as the second batter of the top of the ninth, Tilley, torched a solo shot to right center field, his first home run of the season, giving Nevada its first lead of the game, 4-3. However after the Trojans put a runner on base with a single, O'Guinn stepped to the plate to win it for USC with his walk-off home run in the bottom half of the inning.

Wolf Pack starter Owen Sharts tossed 5.2 innings in a no-decision where he was tagged for three earned runs on just three hits, while striking out a season-high eight batters.

Nevada and USC will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with the final game slated to begin at 1 p.m.
