LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Nevada baseball team dropped its series finale game to USC Sunday afternoon by the final score of 7-2.
Dillan Shrum drove in both Wolf Pack (4-7) runs in Sunday's series finale and finished the game 3-for-3 with three doubles and the two RBI.
Dario Gomez also produced a three-hit game as he went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
The Trojans (6-6) struck first in the game scoring a single run in the bottom of the second. USC plated two more runs in its half of the third after back-to-back solo home runs put the Trojans up 3-0. Nevada got on the board and got a run back in the top of the fourth as
Tyler Bosetti led off the inning with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly to right from Shrum. With strong winds on their side all afternoon, the Trojans belted two more solo home runs in the game, one in the fifth and the other in the sixth inning. USC also scored two more runs in the sixth following the home run that gave them a 7-1 lead after six innings.
Nevada threatened in the top of the seventh after a leadoff single by Gomez and a double by Shrum put two runners in scoring position with no outs. However USC got a strikeout and two line outs to get out of the jam and preserve its six-run lead. Likewise the Trojans pressured for more runs in the bottom of the eighth after loading the bases with no outs. Wolf Pack reliever
Shane Gustafson sent the next three batters down on strikes though to end the threat. Nevada got its final run of the game in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough to overcome a 7-2 advantage by the Trojans.
Nevada is back in action this upcoming weekend as it will play at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park for the first time in 2021 with a three-game series against Fresno State this Saturday (double header) and Sunday.
