SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Nevada men's golf team earned a runner-up finish at the 20-team Lamkin San Diego Classic on Wednesday, its highest team finish so far this season.
The Wolf Pack shot a team score of 290 in Wednesday's final round, its second-best round of the tournament, to finish at 10-over par for the event. Nevada finished just six shots behind the winning team, UCLA, and one shot ahead of Washington for second place. In a highly competitive field, the Wolf Pack placed higher than three top 30 teams in the nation in No. 26 Kansas, No. 22 New Mexico and No. 20 San Diego State.
Senior
Sam Meek posted a strong finish to the tournament, playing his last two rounds at 4-under par, with a 71 in round two and a team-low 69 in the final round. Meek tied for 11
th place in the field of 112 as he was 1-over for the tournament. He played a near flawless round of golf on Wednesday with four birdies and just one bogey to jump into a top 15 finish. Meek tied with fellow senior
Sam Harned for 11
th place as Harned also finished at 1-over for the tournament after carding a 2-over 74 on the final day. Both Meek and Harned were just five strokes behind the individual winner, Devon Bling of UCLA.
In a large and crowded individual field, junior
Trey Davis scored a top 35 finish as he tied for 33
rd place at 6-over par. Sophomore
Michael Sarro, who was playing in his first event as a member of the Wolf Pack, tied for 45
th at 8-over with senior
Brendan MacDougall right behind him at 9-over and tied for 49
th. MacDougall had a strong finish to his week as he posted an even par 72 in the final round, his best round this week.
Nevada will be back in action March 20-21 at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
