UNLV takes two from Nevada to open conference play

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Nevada baseball team began Mountain West play with a doubleheader against in-state rival UNLV on Saturday with the Wolf Pack dropping both contests to the Rebels. UNLV won game one, 3-2, and followed that up with an 8-3 victory in game two.
 
Redshirt junior Jake Jackson tossed 7.0 solid innings in game one, giving up just two earned runs in the first inning while striking out three in a no-decision. The Wolf Pack (3-3, 0-2 MW) plated two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game, but ultimately the Rebels (2-0, 2-0 MW) won on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.
 
In game two the Rebels tagged starting pitcher Cam Walty for three runs in the second, but Nevada cut the deficit to one in its next half inning getting RBI singles from Dario Gomez and Jacob Stinson. It remained a one-run game until UNLV scored one in the fifth and plated three in the seventh to take a commanding lead as the game drew near its end. Nevada got one run across in the ninth, but the deficit was too great to overcome in the final inning.
 
GAME 1
How It Happened
 
-UNLV jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning and held that lead until the ninth.
-Nevada scored two in the ninth to tie the game on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Flores and a single to right by Wyatt Tilley.
-A wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth put runners in scoring position for UNLV and the runner from third scored on a walk-off single.
-UNLV's starting pitcher, Chase Maddux, nearly tossed a complete game shutout before surrendering the two Wolf Pack runs in the ninth.
-Nevada's Jake Jackson threw 7.0 innings in his second start of the season and gave up two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
 
GAME 2
How It Happened
 
-UNLV jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of two Wolf Pack errors in the inning.
-Nevada closed the gap in the top of the third, getting RBI singles from Dario Gomez and Jacob Stinson to cut the lead to 3-2 in favor of the Rebels.
-The Rebels plated one more in the fifth but had another big inning in the seventh, scoring three more runs on four hits.
-Nevada headed into the ninth facing a six-run deficit but only got one of those runs back on an RBI groundout by Stinson.
-Dillan Shrum went 4-for-5 in game two with four singles, Gomez and Dawson Martin each produced three-hit games as the Pack recorded a season-high 14 hits but left 12 on base.
 
UP NEXT
Nevada and UNLV will play the final game of the three-game series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 a.m.
