LOGAN, Utah – Nevada trimmed a 21-point second-half deficit down to two with 31 seconds to play, but the win eluded the Pack Friday at Utah State. The Aggies hit three free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold on and defeat Nevada, 75-72, in Logan.
Desmond Cambridge, Jr. went 9-for-18 from the field and hit five 3-pointers, scoring a game-high 23 points, 13 coming in the second half, for the Pack (14-8, 9-6 MW), which returned to game action for the first time in 19 days. Cambridge, Jr.'s final triple of the night got the Pack within four at 71-67 with 1:16 to play, and, down three with two seconds to go, his desperation heave from past half-court was on target but fell just short.
Forward K.J. Hymes scored 13 of his 15 points on the night in the second half, keeping the Pack in shouting range early in the second half by battling his way through Utah State's Neemias Queta for hard-fought points. Hymes would finish 5-for-12 shooting with a 4-for-5 showing from the line before fouling out with 2:20 to play.
Queta, who finished with a double-double of 16 points and 17 rebounds despite shooting just 3-of-9 from the field, hit one of his 10 free throws after Hymes' fifth foul to put the Aggies up, 71-61.
But the Pack would score eight-straight points behind triples from Grant Sherfield and Cambridge, Jr., and a defensive stop led to Daniel Foster's drive and assist to Robby Robinson, who easily laid in to get the Pack within two at 71-69 and force a Utah State timeout.
Steven Ashworth would hit two free throws after a Wolf Pack foul, and a Sherfield turnover forced Nevada to foul once more. Brock Miller hit one of two freebies to make it a five-point game before Foster drained a triple to cut it to 74-72 with five seconds to play. Ashworth would make one of two at the other end, leading to Cambridge, Jr.'s desperation shot.
The Pack fell into a 16-point halftime hole, trailing 41-25 after shooting just 34.6 percent (9-for-26), while Utah State (15-7, 12-4 MW) outscored Nevada, 23-9, over the final eight minutes of the half.
Justin Bean scored nine of his 19 points in the first half, and got off to a hot start in the second to help the Aggies build their largest lead of the night at 48-27 two minutes in.
The teams will close the series Sunday at 4 p.m. PT on FS1.
