SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – With two runners on and no outs in the bottom of the ninth, redshirt junior
Tyler Cochran entered the game and earned the save in a 2-1 victory for Nevada over Cal Poly, the Wolf Pack's first win of the season.
Nevada (1-1) held a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, getting an insurance run that proved to be necessary in the top of the inning after
Marco Valenzuela drove in
Wyatt Tilley on a sacrifice fly to left. After Cal Poly (1-1) put runners on the corners with no outs, Cochran was called upon to shut the door. He surrendered an RBI single to the first batter he faced, but after that it was lights out.
With runners on first and second and still no outs, Cochran turned and fired a bullet back to
Tyler Bosetti at second base, picking off the lead runner for the first out of the frame. The next batter for the Mustangs flied out to right, leaving just one more out needed for the Pack. On an 0-2 count, Cochran struck out the final Cal Poly batter to earn the first save of his career and secure the 2-1 win for the Wolf Pack.
The Pack pitching staff was masterful in Saturday's win as Cochran, along with starter
Owen Sharts and reliever
Alejandro Murillo, combined to give up just one run on five hits. Sharts tossed four innings and did not allow a hit while striking out seven. Murillo, who was tonight's winning pitcher, came on in the fifth and also threw 4.0 innings, surrendering four hits, allowing the one run and struck out four in his Wolf Pack debut.
On offense the Pack finished the game with eight hits, and scored its first run of the game in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch that allowed Tilley to score from third. Tilley produced a multi-hit game as he and
Anthony Flores both went 2-for-4 from the plate.
Nevada and Cal Poly will play game three of the series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at 1 p.m.
