Nevada ready for Mountain West Championships

THIS WEEK

The Nevada swim and dive team travels to the Mountain West Championships this week. Swim will take place on Feb. 17-20 in Las Vegas. Dive travels on Feb. 18-20 to Colorado Springs, Colo. There will be a live-stream available for both swim and dive on Mountain West Network. Links to the live-streams can be found at NevadaWolfPack.com.

LAST YEAR AT MW CHAMPIONSHIPS

Nevada took second at the 2020 Mountain West Championships and registered a final score of 1,015.50 points. Current undergraduate assistant Andressa Cholodovskis took gold in the 200 free. Diver Laura Isabel Vazquez Lopez registered a  first-place finish on the one-meter board. For the second year in a row, Caitlyn McHugh notched a bronze in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 16:51.01. Wiktoria Samula recorded an NCAA B cut time of 2:11.44 in the 200 breast to take silver. Donna dePolo finished fourth overall with an NCAA B cut time of 2:11.58. Linnea Sorensen finished fifth in the platform diving event with a final score of 257.20 points. 

VAZQUEZ LOPEZ WINS MW DIVER OF THE WEEK

For the fifth time of her career, Junior diver Isabel Vazquez Lopez was named Mountain West Diver of the Week on Jan. 26 after her stellar performance in Nevada's season-opener against UNLV on Jan. 23 . The Guadalajara, Mexico, native's standout performance against UNLV earned her first place finishes in the meet's two diving events. Vazquez Lopez claimed first in the 1 and 3-meter with final scores of 322.50 and 368.77. Her 1-meter score of 322.50 ranks sixth in Nevada history. In addition, her 3-meter score of 368.77 is a new career-high and ranks fifth in school history.

LAST TIME OUT

The Pack had strong performances from several student-athletes during its Jan. 23 dual meet against UNLV. On the diving side, Nevada tallied 1-2-3 finishes in each diving event. Isabel Vazquez Lopez led the way, finishing first in the 1 and 3-meter with final scores of 322.50 and 368.77. In addition to Vazquez Lopez, Jessie Nowotny and Linnea Sorensen registered strong performances. Nowotny and Sorensen finished in second and third place in the 1-meter with final scores of 313.27 and 310.87. In the 3-meter, Sorensen and Nowotny notched second and third finishes. On the swim side, Reno native Donna dePolo came out on top  during the UNLV meet in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2.19.98. In addition to her top finish in the 200 breaststroke, dePolo took third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.20. dePolo also claimed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.10. Sophomore Benedict Nagy finished the 200 IM in third with a final time of 2:09.12. Junior Wiktoria Samula claimed first and second in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:03.75 and 2:20.06.

Josien Wijkhuijs, Wiktoria Samula, Julia Adamczyk and Colette Berkenfield came in second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.32.

WELCOME TO THE PACK

Nevada welcomes four newcomers to the squad for the 2021 season: Kyla Alexander (sophomore, Louisville), Emma Brady (sophomore, Boise State), Reese Lamph (junior, Houston) and Mariana Vignoli (sophomore, Eastern Carolina). 

NEVADA'S OWN

This year's team comprises of student-athletes from five states and eight different countries (United States, New Zealand, Poland, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Netherlands and Sweden). In addition, the Wolf Pack roster features five Nevadans: Donna dePolo (Reno, Nev.), Valerie Kitchens (Las Vegas, Nev.), Reese Lamph (Las Vegas, Nev.), Montana Lloyd (Boulder City, Nev.) and Benedict Nagy (Reno, Nev.). In addition, head coach Brendon Bray is a Reno native and graduate of Reno High School where he won three state championships.
