Nevada falls short in comeback attempt against Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Despite a strong performance from freshman Audrey Roden and fourth-quarter resurgence, Nevada fell short in its comeback against Santa Clara (2-0) on Sunday. Roden, who recorded her first-career double-digit scoring performance, finished the game with 17 points, four assists, four rebounds, one block and one assist.

"I'm proud of how our team answered at the end of the game," said Roden. "Despite being down, we responded to the adversity and fired back. That shows a lot of growth and resilience. I know we will bounce back."

Senior Eliska Stebetakova and sophomore Kenna Holt almost joined Roden in double figures after finishing the game with nine and eight points, respectively. Holt stacked her stat line against the Broncos with six rebounds, five assists and one steal while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the field.

Freshman Natalie Lathrop recorded her first points in a Wolf Pack uniform after entering the game with 6:09 left in the third. Lathrop finished the day with six points on 3-for-3 shooting and five boards.

Megan Ormiston got the Pack going in the first quarter, grabbing an offensive rebound for the put-back in Nevada's first possession. The game remained close in the first quarter with Santa Clara holding a 15-11 lead. The Broncos opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run before heading into half with a 45-23 lead.

Nevada didn't back down to the challenge at the Leavey Center.

Roden knocked down a three in the left corner with 1:24 left in the third to cut Nevada's deficit to 21. Then, Da"Ja Hamilton hit a pair of free throws to diminish Santa Clara's lead even more.

Two layups from Lathrop and three pointers from Roden and Kylie Jimenez cut Santa Clara's lead to 65-51.

Santa Clara resurfaced after calling a timeout with six minutes left, holding onto a 73-60 win.
