RENO, Nev. – Nevada pulled even after trailing by 16 at halftime Friday night against San Diego, but could not complete the comeback, falling, 75-68, at Lawlor Events Center.
Playing without
AJ Bramah and
K.J. Hymes, Nevada was short-handed inside, which San Diego took advantage of with 40 points in the paint Friday.
Warren Washington fought gamely, posting the fourth double-double of his career, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds, including scoring eight over the Pack's 19-3 start to the second half. He also blocked a pair of shots.
That 19-3 run over the first seven minutes, 48 seconds of the half brought the Pack even at 51-51 after trailing, 48-32, at the break. But it was short-lived, as Vladimir Pinchuk immediately responded with a layup to put San Diego back in front, 53-51.
Despite Nevada's furious attempts to rally, that Torero lead held up the rest of the way. Jase Townsend, who led San Diego with 18 points, converted a three-point play with 9:37 to go, and Marcellus Earlington followed with a bucket to get the Torero lead back to seven at 60-53.
Earlington scored four of San Diego's next eight, putting the Toreros back up double digits at 68-57 with five minutes left.
Grant Sherfield scored four-straight points for Nevada, followed by Tré Coleman's triple from the right wing and another dunk from Washington, and the Pack looked poised to steal it, cutting the deficit to 70-66 with 2:11 to play.
Sherfield got to the line for a 1-and-1 with a minute and a half to go, with a chance to make it a one-possession game, but missed the front end. A defensive stop gave Nevada another shot, but a 3-point attempt came up short.
San Diego went 3-of-4 from the line over the final 33 seconds to ice it.
Along with Washington in double digits, Sherfield finished with 13 points,
Will Baker had 12, and Coleman netted 10. Nevada out-rebounded San Diego, 39-33.
