SANTA CLARA, Calif. – An 11-0 Santa Clara run midway through the second half broke open a tie game, and sent Nevada to its second-straight loss, 96-74, Tuesday night at the Leavey Center.
The Pack (1-2) wraps the road trip Thursday night at San Francisco. The matchup with the Dons is set for a 7:30 p.m. tip and will be broadcast on Stadium.
Grant Sherfield, who finished the night with a team-best 23 points, hit a jumper with 11:11 to play to knot it up at 57-57.
But it was all Santa Clara from there. Jalen Williams answered with a three-point play, and PJ Pipes scored eight-straight points to close the run and put the Broncos ahead, 68-57.
Nevada did well to limit Santa Clara's leading scorer in Josip Vrankic, who only had four points on the night. But it was forwards Parker Braun and Keshawn Justice that did the damage, with Braun going 9-for-10 for 19 points, and Justice hitting four 3-pointers and closing the night with 18 points.
Justice hit three triples within the span of a minute, 31 seconds early on, erasing Nevada's quick 9-0 lead and putting the Broncos ahead, 13-11. Sherfield, Will Baker, and Desmond Cambridge Jr. hit triples in the opening minute and a half to get the Pack off to a hot start, but Santa Clara's hot shooting got the Broncos back into it.
Santa Clara shot 52.9 percent from the field Tuesday, while the Pack cooled off after its hot start, finishing at 39.1 (27-for-69).
Cambridge Jr. finished the night with 18 points, and was joined in double figures by the returning AJ Bramah, who scored 11 to go with six rebounds.
Nevada got seven first-half points from DeAndre Henry, while Sherfield had 10 in the opening 20 minutes, to help Nevada to a 42-39 halftime lead.
Santa Clara opened the second half with nine-straight points, seven coming from Parker, to take a 48-42 lead.
