Game Recap: Softball | | Josie Copley

Nevada splits the second day in Hawai`i

HONOLULU, Hawai`i - The Wolf Pack split the second day of the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament taking down Seattle U, 3-2 before dropping a six inning loss to Hawai`i, 11-3. Nevada is now 6-11 on the season.

Nevada 3, Seattle U 2

Kendall Fritz started in the circle and pitched another complete game with just two earned runs and eight strikeouts. The sophomore is now 5-4 on the season.

The game stayed knotted at zero until the third inning when senior Haley Burda hit a solo home run to put the Pack on top early. Nevada led until the top of the fifth inning when Seattle U put together three singles to score two runs and take the lead, 2-1.

It stayed in favor of Seattle U until the bottom of the sixth when Lauren Gutierrez had a lead off triple to put her in scoring position early. Charli McLendon was up next and scored Gutierrez on a RBI grounder to tie it up, 2-2.

In the top of the seventh inning, Fritz recorded back to back strikeouts and Mele Tausinga grabbed a foul ball near the dugout to end the inning. Danielle Lew stepped up to the plate and rocketed a lead off solo home run to give Nevada the win, 3-2.

Hawai`i 11, Nevada 3 (6)

Blake Craft got the ball in the night cap and pitched just one out before Julia Jensen came in relief and finished the game. Jensen pitched 4 ⅔ innings with two strikeouts.

Nevada scored the first run in the top of the first after Gutierrez singled and plated Sierra Mello to take the 1-0 lead. It was short lived however, as Hawai`i plated six runs in the bottom of the first on five hits and an error in the outfield to take the 6-1 lead.

Hawai`i added three more runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead 9-1 before Nevada plated two runs in the fifth to attempt a rally but it fell short when Hawai`i hit a two-run home run to win in the sixth, 11-3.

The Pack plays two more tomorrow beginning with Oregon State at 2:30 pm before a rematch with Hawai`i at 5 pm. PT.
