RENO, Nev. – The Nevada women's basketball team will host the Cowgirls of Wyoming for its regular season home finale this Monday, Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. from Lawlor Events Center.
Monday also marks senior night for the Wolf Pack where it will honor its two seniors,
Sami Dinan and
Marguerite Effa, following the game. Fans can gain access to the game for free by donating a coat or gently used item. Fans must use the entrance by West Stadium Parking Garage, near sections 22-26. The coat drive benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters and SAAC. Fans can also bring 10 or more player trading cards, that have been distributed throughout the season, to the same section in order to get a free ticket to the game.
Nevada had its four-game win streak snapped to the MW regular season champs Fresno State on Saturday, but has still won five of its last seven games. The loss to the Bulldogs however, put the Pack out of contention for a first round bye in next week's MW tournament. Even if Nevada wins its last two games, and UNLV, which currently holds the No. 5 seed, loses its last two, UNLV would hold the tiebreaker over the Wolf Pack.
ON THE AIR
Doug Greenwald will have the call in Northern Nevada on CBS Sports Radio 94.1 FM and 1450 AM with a 20 minute pregame show prior to tipoff. Fans can also tune in to listen to Greenwald's broadcast online at TuneIn.com or via the TuneIn app.
The game will also be live streamed on the Mountain West Network.
SENIOR NIGHT
Following the conclusion of Monday night's game between Nevada and Wyoming, the Wolf Pack will honor its two-member senior class. The two-member senior class consists of
Sami Dinan, a four-year walk-on and local product, and
Marguerite Effa, a grad transfer from USC who is in her first and only season with Nevada.
SERIES HISTORY
Nevada and Wyoming have been playing basketball against one another since the early 80s, but have just 24 games between them in the nearly 40-year span. Overall the Cowgirls own the all-time series, winning 17 times in 24 attempts. On Monday the Wolf Pack will be trying to snap a two-game losing streak to the Cowgirls. Under head coach
Amanda Levens the Pack is 1-4 against the Cowgirls, but that one win sent Nevada to the MW Championship game in 2018.
CAPTURE THE ESSENCE
Sophomore
Essence Booker has been on fire in the last 10 games. The Las Vegas native has scored in double figures in those 10 and is averaging 14.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in that stretch. She was near perfect from the free throw line in the OT win over New Mexico, knocking down 10-of-12 in the win over New Mexico. Booker enters Monday's game leading the team and ranking ninth in the Mountain West having hit 44 3-pointers this season. To put that in perspective, she only made 14 3-pointers in all of last season. Additionally Booker hit 500 points in her collegiate career during the game at Fresno State.
MAR OH MAR
Senior
Marguerite Effa has really picked up her play as of late. The Los Angeles, Calif. native had the game of her career vs. SJSU. Effa totaled 31 points and 15 rebounds, both of which are career highs, to post her second double-double of the season. She was nearly unstoppable as she connected on 71.4 percent of her shots, hitting 15-of-21, setting career highs there too. Effa is just the sixth player in the Mountain West this season to score 30+ points in a single game. She is the only player to score 30+ points in a single game and record a double-double while doing so. Effa has now scored in double figures in 10 of her last 13 games and eclipsed 400 points in her collegiate career during the game against New Mexico.
CAN YOU ASSIST ME?
The Wolf Pack has been one of the best teams in the Mountain West in terms of sharing the basketball. Heading into Monday's game against Wyoming, Nevada ranks fifth in the conference in assists per game, averaging 14.56 per game. The Pack has dished out at least 10 assists in all but three of its 27 games, including two 20-assist games. Nevada has three players with at least 60 assists this season, all of whom are pretty close together with their totals. Junior
Miki'ala Maio currently leads the team with 64 assists, but is followed closely by sophomore
Essence Booker's 63 and freshman Jená Williams' 61. Booker is averaging 3.7 assists per game in her last four contests.
MILESTONE WATCH
Nevada has a few players who are approaching milestones, some of whom could hit those numbers Monday evening vs. Wyoming.
•
Jacqulynn Nakai - 22 points shy of 100
•
Amaya West - 15 points shy of 200
•
Da'Ja Hamilton - 13 points shy of 300
•
Nia Alexander - 29 points shy of 600
DON'T FORGET ABOUT IMANI
Sophomore
Imani Lacy has quietly been one of the most consistent Wolf Pack players through 27 games this season. In the Pack's home game against Boise State, Lacy posted the second 20-point game of her career, and first this season, after scoring a game and career-high 28 points. Lacy was terrific in that game, hitting 8-of-14 from the field and 12-of-14 from the free throw line, both which were career highs. She has been especially impressive this season with her free throw shooting and shot blocking. Lacy currently ranks fifth in the conference in blocks per game at 1.26, and ranks seventh in the league in free throw shooting, hitting 69.0 percent.
FEELING HOT, HOT, HOT
The Wolf Pack is playing some of its best basketball as of late, having won five of its last seven games. Nevada's four-game win streak came to an end on Saturday at Fresno State but during that stretch of four consecutive wins, Nevada had knocked off the MW's No. 2 and 3 teams in San Jose State and UNLV. These wins have bumped the Wolf Pack from ninth to a tie for sixth in the league standings. The loss at Fresno State over the weekend however, put the Pack out of contention for a first round bye in next week's MW Tournament. The best the Pack can hope for is to hold on to the No. 6 seed.
UP NEXT: REGULAR SEASON WRAP UP
The Wolf Pack will travel down to San Diego, Calif. to conclude the 2019-20 regular season as it will face the Aztecs of San Diego State this Thursday, Feb. 27 at 5:30 p.m. PT from Viejas Arena. Depending on the outcome of Monday night's games around the Mountain West, Thursday's game could have seeding implications for the upcoming Mountain West Tournament. Currently as it stands, Nevada and San Diego State are tied for sixth in the league standings, but the Wolf Pack holds the tiebreaker right now having beat the Aztecs earlier this season.
