PALO ALTO, Calif. - Nevada took down Pac-12 opponent, Stanford who was receiving votes in both polls, 8-3 on Sunday in the series finale. The Pack is now 4-10 on the year.
Ashley Salausa,
Mele Tausinga,
Sierra Mello and
Lauren Gutierrez all had multi-hit games while Salausa and Tausinga both tallied three RBI games. Mello and Salausa were responsible for four of the eight runs for the Pack and the team combined for six walks in the game.
Stanford got on the board first plating two runs in the bottom of the third inning but the Pack cut the lead in half on a wild pitch that scored
Sierra Mello from third. The Cardinal turned around and knocked a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to negate the Nevada run. The Pack however, was not letting up and the action started in the top of the fifth.
The inning started with a single from
Danielle Lew and she was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Chelie Senini.
Sadaria McAlister drew a one-out walk to put two runners on and Mello capitalized knocking a single to load the bases. Salausa walked up and knocked a bases clearing double to put the Pack up, 4-3, still with just one out. The momentum carried over to Tausinga who had an RBI single, scoring Salausa and put Nevada up, 5-3.
Lauren Gutierrez hit a single to give the Pack another base runner but back to back strikeouts ended the inning.
Nevada put together back to back perfect innings sitting the next six Stanford batters down to get to the seventh inning with a two-run lead. Salausa was the lead off batter in the top of the seventh and yet again, hit a double to the right center wall to put her on base with no outs. Tausinga kept the ball rolling, knocking a two run home run over the left field wall and gave Nevada the 7-3 lead. The scoring continued after Gutierrez lined a double down the left field line and was brought home after a single from
Haley Burda and an RBI groundout from McLendon. Nevada took the win, 8-3.
Blake Craft started in the circle and pitched the first inning before
Jana Pope came in and pitched the second inning.
Julia Jensen entered the circle at the top of the third and pitched an inning and a third, before
Kendall Fritz came in and finished the game. Fritz pitched 3 ⅔ shutout innings, allowing zero runs and just one hit with just one strikeout. The sophomore is now 3-4 on the year.
Up next for the Pack is a five-game tournament in Hawaii that will put Nevada against Oregon State, Seattle U and Hawaii beginning on Feb. 27.
